WASHINGTON - The United States and the Iraqi government are launching a new diplomatic initiative to invite Iran and Syria to a "neighbors meeting" on stabilizing Iraq, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday.
....
The move reflects a change of approach by the Bush administration, which previously had resisted calls by members of Congress and by a bipartisan Iraq review group to include Iran and Syria in diplomatic talks on stabilizing Iraq.

And from 'Meet The Press'- Sept 17, 2007:
"Mr. Webb: And we need to convene an international conference with the countries in, in tangential and the countries that have cultural and historic ties to Iraq in order to have them move forward with us and, and assume some responsibility for the future of Iraq. The United States can't do this."

Especially with the British withdrawal this move gives the Bush administration a little breathing space.
I sincerely hope the talks ARE serious, because they make sense. But this administration has given everyone reasons for skepticism.
