"Half of One Highway Interchange" for Northern Virginia

Today's Washington Post editorial page explains extremely well how pitiful the House Republican transportation "compromise" truly is:

Under the package approved last week by the General Assembly, the state would send Northern Virginia just $54 million in new road construction money a year. Fact: A new highway interchange, such as the one planned for Interstate 66 and Route 29 in Gainesville, costs about $110 million. Also: The state money would run out in about eight years.

In other words, according to the Post, "the legislative powers in Richmond have decided to pay for each year to relieve the beleaguered commuters of Northern Virginia: half of one highway interchange, or the equivalent thereof."

Wow.  Half of one interchange.  Would that look something like the photo above?  Hey, don't drive too fast on THAT interchange! :)

And the best news... (Eric - 2/27/2007 12:18:06 PM)
is that we'll all be paying for that half interchange for the next twenty years by stealing money from education and other critical services.

Time to rebel (totallynext - 2/27/2007 10:51:43 PM)
Northern Virginia tax payers - should all change their tax deductions to 9 - and tell the legistlator that they will not fund the state until a transportation plan with the needs of NOVA is addressed.

Stop the money flow.....
