Centreville as most probably know was a major encampment site for both armies during the Civil War. But its history goes further back than that to when it was known as Newgate, and served as a place of rest for those heading west to the Shenandoah Valley. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson are known to have stayed here on more than one occasion.
Vestiges of this history including old dwellings such as Mt. Gilead built in 1785, newer structures such as the Spindle House, one of the few remaining Sears Kit Houses left standing in the United States, as well as Civil War forts, earthworks, and cabin sites will now all be protected by this action.
It also opens the way for county acquisition of new land in the area and the establishment of a county historic park, including hopefully, the construction of a museum.
This is an excellent example of forward looking action by local governments...something I wish the state and federal government could display more often!
