"What I'm worried about is that the American public will be quite perplexed by the president adding forces while our principal ally is subtracting forces," said Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), a longtime war supporter who opposes Bush's troop increase. "That is the burden we are being left with here."The fact is, Democrats (and others) are correct when they assert that the decision by Tony Blair - coming after a similar withdrawal announcements by Denmark and South Korea - "evidence that Bush's international coalition is collapsing and that the United States is increasingly alone in a losing cause." Another Republican Senator, Arlen Specter, sums it up nicely:
The notion that the British pullback actually signals success sounds like bad spin, added Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.). "I think it's Alice in Wonderland looking through the looking glass," he said.
Alice in Wonderland or Humpty Dumpty? Because, having broken it, we're not going to be putting Iraq back together again anytime soon. No matter what our Fearless Leader and his Vice President for Extraordinary Rendition and Waterboarding has to say on the subject. Frankly, those guys have less credibility at this point than a Virginia House Republican claiming to be fiscally responsible. Perhaps we can send them all into retirement where they can be "perplexed" together?
