Hotline: "Kaine You Feel The Heat?"

The Hotline blog has its take on the JJ Dinner this past Saturday evening, including Gov. Kaine's endorsement of Barack Obama and the popular support among Virginia Democrats for Mark Warner as "VP! VP! VP!"  Hotline points out that, although other campaigns - Clinton, Edwards, Clark - had a presence inside and outside of the event, "the overwhelming majority of attendees crowded the Obama campaign's table before and after the dinner."  That's what I saw as well, but in fairness, Obama was the speaker so it's not surprising that he'd have more supporters there.

Actually.... (Turning VA Blue - 2/20/2007 11:12:41 AM)
I was present most of the weekend.

AND I saw more Edwards supporters there than Obama.  In private conversations there was more buzz for Edwards, but many are reluctant to commit openly.

The Edwards people were volunteers, not flown in from all over the country!  I asked some Obama people where they were from, and some were from Virginia, but others were his staff from Illinois and DC.

The Edwards volunteers were Virginian Democrats.

Additionally, there was a table set up for John Edwards at every event all weekend long outside every door.  Obama stuck to the table by the JJ Dinner only Saturday.

I was VERY impressed with the organization of the John Edwards volunteers, and how the card table was broken down and dragged to the next room down the hall or across the street.  Reminded me of the wagon last year for Webb.

There are REAL GRASS ROOTS for John Edwards!

Interesting, what did other people observe (Lowell - 2/20/2007 11:35:16 AM)
at the JJ Dinner with regard to '08 supporters?  Thanks.

Saw Clinton (Teddy - 2/20/2007 11:52:54 AM)
supporters (young folks, probably part of her campaign staff?) passing out Hillary yard signs, mostly after the J-J Dinner.

The Clinton signs were funny! (Turning VA Blue - 2/20/2007 12:18:26 PM)
They stapled them to EVERY damn pole outside the convention center, as well as the ashtray thingys (technical term).  You know the ones where the cigarette goes in the hole and drops to the base...

Who puts signs on ashtrays?

I wondered on the chilly walk back to the hotel if the signs were placed there to remind Obama of Clinton when he went to put out his cigarette.

No diss intended (drmontoya - 2/20/2007 4:37:36 PM)
But.. your an Edwards supporter so isn't it likely you were around fellow Edwards supporters?

I really don't think you can say for certain the Virginia is Edwards country. In fact, it's pretty split for everyone right now.

I will say I attended the DNC winter meeting in DC and the Edwards campaign was one of the most organized.. the most. Hillary "the machine" Clinton.

But, it's early.. so we shall see what happens.

Not so much (Turning VA Blue - 2/20/2007 5:35:04 PM)
No diss taken, but...

"...your an Edwards supporter so isn't it likely you were around fellow Edwards supporters?"

First of all I am not much of a follower.

Second, I was around Edwards supporters because they were all around.

Third, I am not sure if you were there Friday and Saturday, but there were many events, and many meetings, not just the JJ and the receptions before and cocktails after.

I even met someone in the hotel elevator Sunday morning - I certainly was not following him.

So I was with a variety of people throughout the weekend.

Sometimes the topic never came up.  But, Democrats at JJ are not shy.  They, when asked tell you who their pick is.  So perhaps I asked more than others.

But, there are some people who tend to stick to their friends and that is all so I can understand why you would think that.  I am not one of those people. I pretty much talk to everyone.

Sounds good (drmontoya - 2/20/2007 5:40:38 PM)
I think it's still too early to tell who's going to win Virgina next year.

paying for obama stuff... (lgb30856 - 2/20/2007 1:22:03 PM)
after all the money we paid for the dinner and other events, it was kind of crass to pay for obama stuff. ok, I would pay for a shirt but a $10 pin? really that was a bit much.

Obama gear a little stiff.. (drmontoya - 2/20/2007 4:35:32 PM)
But, 100% of the money goes to his campaign.

So.. it's good to buy his gear for that price if you support his campaign.

"...writing this new chapter of race relations" (Lowell - 2/20/2007 2:56:10 PM)
In yesterday's Washington Times, former Gore for President campaign manager Donna Brazile writes:

I still find it hard to believe that a white Southern governor is prepared to throw his support behind a young African-American senator from the North. We are a long way from becoming a colorblind society, but it would help if we had colorblind politicians.

Mr. Kaine, to his credit, will play a major role in writing this new chapter of race relations based on respect, shared values and matters of conscience, not color. This new chapter may take years to finish, but it may start this presidential season in Virginia.

Very intriguing.

VIDEO on WaPo (joe8track - 2/20/2007 5:08:46 PM)
I just saw that the WaPo site has footage from the press conference, one of the receptions and the JJ.

Obama has Tom Hanks and Dreamworks (Bernie Quigley - 2/20/2007 10:12:39 PM)
Tom Hanks paid $2,500 today I think for a ticket to see Obama in something put together by Spielberrg, Geffen and Katzenbach, the Three Celestial Visionaries of Dreamworks. Geffen was there when John Lennon died, when Joni Mitchell first appeared in the world and everywhere in between. These people, Hanks included, are the pulse and essential poets of the American condition. If Obama has them, he has the nomination. Obama/Warner/Clark/Webb all in a mix for the next 20 years.
