Image Hosted by ImageShack.usThere is some good news to pass along regarding efforts to raise the minimum wage here in the Commonwealth.  I received the following update from the Virginia Interfaith Center earlier tonight:

The Senate bill to raise the minimum wage to $6.50 an hour just passed the House Commerce and Labor Committee!  After being tabled this morning in the subcommittee, Del. Ken Plum brought it back for reconsideration during the full House C & L meeting this afternoon. The bill passed on a 12-9 vote.

Del. Brian Moran and several others have already seen their attempts to raise the minimum wage go down in defeat.  The current Senate bill, which was proposed by Sen. Charles Colgan, would set the min wage at $6.50 as of July 1st.  The bill would expire if the federal minimum wage is raised above that level.

The Virginia Interfaith Center urges you to contact your Delegates immediately as this bill could be killed as early as tomorrow!

We anticipate that a motion may be made on the floor tomorrow to have the bill re-referred back to committee (which would kill the bill).  Therefore, it is urgent that all members of the House are contacted and asked to support SB 1327 to raise the minimum wage.  Please call or email your delegate!

The toll free hotline for the Virginia House of Delegates is:

Make sure you ask to speak to your House Delegate and then ask them to:

Please support SB 1327 and vote to Raise the Minimum Wage!

This is so important (eomalley - 2/16/2007 10:23:08 AM)
Ryan, thanks for keeping us updated on this important legislation.  It's good to know our Delegates and Senators are not giving up on it.  The problem is convincing the Republicans led by Howell that it's the right thing to do.  They seem more interested in blocking Kaine's every move than anything else.

INSANE! (Turning VA Blue - 2/16/2007 4:12:52 PM)
It is irritating to think we must call all our legislators to tell them the minimum wage needs to be raised.

Seems to me we have some brain dead people in Richmond.

Are they that far out of touch with reality?

Is it that they are accustomed to dealing only with numbers in the millions and billions they cannot comprehend something like $5.15?

Do they not realize a gallon of milk costs about $4?  A value meal at your fast food place of choice almost $6?  A gallon of gas $2.15 or more?

Surely they have cars that run on gasoline!

Geez!

This is not rocket science!
