This time they are warning against war with Iran.
In September 2002 both private citizens Jim Webb and Wesley Clark both warned against military action in Iraq. Webb in his Washington Post Op-Ed piece "Heading for trouble" and Wesley Clark in 2002 warning against the consequences of attacking Iraq unilaterally in his testimony to Congress.
Well this week, they are at it again.
Both Jim Webb and Wesley Clark this week are warning against any buildup to invade Iran. Not many people paid attention to either of them in 2002 when they made it clear that Iraq would not solve our fight to win the war on terror.
Now, again.. they offer another warning in hope we listen this time.
*UPDATE: What a coincidence, lead story today: Iran's leader warns U.S. against attack
[UPDATE by Lowell: Also see today's Washington Post op-ed by two leading Iran experts, Vali Nasr and Ray Tayekh, entitled "The Iran Option That Isn't on the Table."]
Now, with these two powerful voices talking about Iran, only fools would ignore them and it will be at our peril. Go here to see Clark's very recent statement on Iran http://securingameri....
It is obvious they are extremely concerned about this and are each trying everything in their power to step in and keep the next war from happening. Clark warned in the days after 9-11 that a Pentagon source told him we were not only going to war with Iraq, but with Syria, Iran and other nations in that region. This is the PNAC plan and it seems the neo-cons in the Bush administration are following it like a recipe.
Thanks for this great post!!
Jim Webb for Senate '06 = Wes Clark for President '08
Steve!
When our antiwar delegation of twenty Virginians met with Webb's staff a week and a half ago, his legislative director Mike Sozan said that the Senator was looking with interest at Walter Jones' (R-NC) H.J.Res. 14 as a model for a possible Senate resolution. I would very much like to see Sen. Webb introduce such a bill, or to see that someone else introduces it and quickly become a cosponsor.
In the House, Jones' resolution has 24 co-sponsors; the very similar bill from DeFazio (D-OR), H.Con.Res. 33 has 38; and there is a third, H.Con.Res. 43 from Ron Paul of TX.
[Thomas.loc.gov does not provide permanent links to bills, so search on the bill number to see the text and current status.]
Right now the only Senate bill that would perform any similar kind of function is Sen. Byrd's S.Res. 39, which is both a very weak and symbolic resolution (of the kind that commends the Miss America organization, honors the life of so-and-so, etc.), has gathered only one co-sponsor, and doesn't deal specifically with Iran.
To discover whether your House representative has co-sponsored any of the no-war-on-Iran resolutions, see this list from Just Foreign Policy. Get them on board, and let Sen. Webb know you appreciate his speaking out and would appreciate even more seeing some ACTION, in the form of concrete legislation.
