Albo Must Go hammers their favorite target and takes on the GOP's unworkable transportation plan.  At the same time.

The whole post is worth a read, but this summation of the GOP's "solution" to our transportation crisis is priceless:

First, Virginia's Republicans starve state government for over a decade - creating one of the largest transportation crises the Commonwealth has ever faced.

Then, they take credit for solving the problem by giving localities the authority to levy taxes to fund less than 10% of our identified needs?

Next, they recruit candidates to attack local Boards of Supervisors who are up for election this year for voting to raise taxes that the General Assembly has authorized.

And great point about the "independent journalists" out there consistently letting the GOP politicians slide by on their ridiculous positions (and contradictions). I dream of a day when Virginia's traditional media joins the blogs in actually investigating behind the political soundbites.

The Whole Thing is a Joke (MV Democrat - 1/30/2007 4:23:53 PM)
I cannot believe that the alleged transportation plan has gotten nearly as much traction as it has in the press.  The GOP has done a terrific job manipulating the press on the subject and convincing papers like the Washington Post that it is actually a good proposal from a public policy perspective.

This proposal is a big revenue shifting scheme that is highly reliant on debt.  Virginia has never needed to fund transportation projects in this fashion.  They have relied on gas taxes, dedicated sales taxes, and debt for very specific projects.

The GOP proposal is a major reorientation of transportation funding and it is poorly thought out and nothing but a political stalking horse for people unwilling to lead.

A really bad joke (Lowell - 1/30/2007 4:29:15 PM)
...on the people of Virginia.  These Republicans are offering a heaping pile of fiscal irresponsibility, debt, and heartlessness on a silver platter.  Dig in, everyone, I hear it's really tasty! Yummmmmm.... :)
