The following is from Troy Farlow, who is running against Del. Melanie Rapp (R-Yorktown).  According to Project Vote Smart, Rapp is a social issues far-right-winger, with zero ratings from NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, Planned Parenthood, Americans United for Seperation of Church and State, and Equality Virginia.  She also gets a zero from Virginia AFL-CIO, so she's anti-labor as well.  On the flip side, Rapp receives 100% ratings from The Family Foundation of Virginia and the Virginia Society for Human Life.  As I said, she's a social issues far-right-winger.  Obviously, it's time to take back this seat.

Troy Farlow files official paperwork for 96th District House of Delegates Seat

After much planning and local support, Virginia native and successful businessman Troy Farlow has filed to run for the 96th District seat in the House of Delegates. The district, which includes parts of York County, James City County, and Newport News, is currently represented by Del. Melanie Rapp. Farlow formally filed his papers with the Virginia State Board of Elections on January 22nd.

"I have talked to people all across the district," Farlow says, "from Norge and Toano to York and Tabb, and one thing is abundantly clear: people are frustrated with the half-promises and political speak coming out of Richmond. To change the General Assembly, we've got to change the people we send there, and that's just what I aim to do. The people of the Peninsula deserve a strong, independent voice that will stand up and make the tough decisions for our community."

As for the campaign itself, Farlow plans to address the most pressing needs facing the Peninsula, including transportation, education, and smart growth. "I'm passionate about these issues," says Farlow, "because they require innovative and forward-thinking solutions that force us to look beyond our political party and work together. I am disappointed, though, that many of our elected officials in Richmond abdicate responsibility and pass the burden onto local communities. We need real solutions in the General Assembly, and I cannot stand by while these officials blatantly pick partisanship over progress and politics over people."

Throughout his life, Farlow has felt a deep call to public service. In response to the events of September 11, 2001, Troy left graduate school at Duke University and moved to New York City to volunteer with a small investment-banking firm that lost nearly half its staff in the World Trade Center attacks. In addition, Troy has worked throughout the business world, finding success both as a management consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers and as a small business owner on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

For now, Farlow is walking door to door in the district, talking with voters and listening to their concerns. He expects to launch formally his campaign at a kick-off event in March.

Welcome to the Battles, Troy (Newport News Dem - 1/31/2007 3:41:06 PM)
Rapp is one of the worst out there. I remember when Dick Ashe challenged her in a GOP primary a few years back, she made a big issue of the facts Ashe was "living in sin" with his girlfriend. That's talking issues for ya'

Good luck!
