Eighth Commandment, Bob Marshall.

Not Larry Sabato points out an RTD quote from Bob Marshall:

"I saw some little black kid who had a T-shirt on that said 'My dad's name is Donor,' and I thought, that's pathetic," Marshall said."

A google search for the phrase in quotes brings up only two hits.  The first hit is from January 27, 2006 with Concerned Women for America quoting this exact phrase from Marshall!
The only other hit is a reference to Charles Colson using the phrase in 2005. If you go to this link and search the page for donor, there's a reference to a December 02, 2005 piece by Charles Colson using that term.

The link to the original Colson article "Although they claim to be wise..." is dead, but it does go to the site where Colson had the article - Prison Fellowship Ministries:

Prison Fellowship was founded by Chuck Colson, who served as special counsel to President Nixon and went to prison in 1975 for Watergate-related crimes. When Colson got out of prison, God radically redirected this former attorney's career goals-leading him to go back to prison, this time to minister to the men and women behind bars. Established in 1976, Prison Fellowship has grown into the largest prison ministry in the world, partnering with thousands of churches and tens of thousands of volunteers.

Here's Colson's bio at that site - http://www.pfm.org/B...

The other primary writer there is Mark Early - http://www.pfm.org/B...

The catechism addresses this behavior very explicitly:

V. THE USE OF THE SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS MEDIA

2493 Within modern society the communications media play a major role in information, cultural promotion, and formation. This role is increasing, as a result of technological progress, the extent and diversity of the news transmitted, and the influence exercised on public opinion.

2494 The information provided by the media is at the service of the common good.284 Society has a right to information based on truth, freedom, justice, and solidarity:

The proper exercise of this right demands that the content of the communication be true and - within the limits set by justice and charity - complete. Further, it should be communicated honestly and properly. This means that in the gathering and in the publication of news, the moral law and the legitimate rights and dignity of man should be upheld.285

2495 "It is necessary that all members of society meet the demands of justice and charity in this domain. They should help, through the means of social communication, in the formation and diffusion of sound public opinion."286 Solidarity is a consequence of genuine and right communication and the free circulation of ideas that further knowledge and respect for others.

2496 The means of social communication (especially the mass media) can give rise to a certain passivity among users, making them less than vigilant consumers of what is said or shown. Users should practice moderation and discipline in their approach to the mass media. They will want to form enlightened and correct consciences the more easily to resist unwholesome influences.

2497 By the very nature of their profession, journalists have an obligation to serve the truth and not offend against charity in disseminating information. They should strive to respect, with equal care, the nature of the facts and the limits of critical judgment concerning individuals. They should not stoop to defamation.

2498 "Civil authorities have particular responsibilities in this field because of the common good. . . . It is for the civil authority . . . to defend and safeguard a true and just freedom of information."287 By promulgating laws and overseeing their application, public authorities should ensure that "public morality and social progress are not gravely endangered" through misuse of the media.288 Civil authorities should punish any violation of the rights of individuals to their reputation and privacy. They should give timely and reliable reports concerning the general good or respond to the well-founded concerns of the people. Nothing can justify recourse to disinformation for manipulating public opinion through the media. Interventions by public authority should avoid injuring the freedom of individuals or groups.

2499 Moral judgment must condemn the plague of totalitarian states which systematically falsify the truth, exercise political control of opinion through the media, manipulate defendants and witnesses at public trials, and imagine that they secure their tyranny by strangling and repressing everything they consider "thought crimes."

Bob Marshall is disturbed (Lowell - 1/29/2007 9:59:39 AM)
He's also not the brightest bulb on the block, if he wants to reduce abortions while simultaneously discouraging use of contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies.  Seems to me that the most effective way to reduce abortions is contraception, but apparently not in Bob Marshall's Bizarro World.  How can this guy possible be a member of the Virginia House of Delegates?  Do people in his district actually think he's anything other than an extremist and a wackjob?  I don't get it.

Bob's vision makes perfect sense (Eric - 1/29/2007 11:35:52 AM)
if you completely discount human nature.

The way Bob sees it is that no one should be involved in reproductive activities who isn't trying to get pregnant.  In that world there is no need for either contraception or abortion because everyone will simply abstain except for when they want to have a baby.

The real disconnect is that so many of the Republicans who vote for whack jobs like Marshall are very much in touch with their, um, human nature, and yet they still vote for him even though he stands in direct contradiction with their behavior.  What are they thinking?  I don't get it either.

The Ten Commandments (Gordie - 1/29/2007 10:00:38 AM)
You bring up an interesting point. That is just how much the Religious Right and so called Christians who use Religion to promote there agenda are breaking the Ten Commandments. Especially those seeking Public Office.

On Saturday, Jan 27th it was our plan for months to attend the Peace March in DC, because of health reasons we stayed home and watched it on CSpan. The actor Tim ??? gave an outstanding speech about DUBYA claiming that GOD has spoken to him, then Tim goes down the list of Ten Commandments Dubya has broken in the past six years to justify his War. From the list it sounded like he broke almost every one of them. Plus the rumors of him and Condi, he may have broken that one also.

Yes, GOD gives us the right to defend ourselves, but there is a limit.

The list goes on and on (PM - 1/29/2007 10:28:35 AM)
Bob Marshall, Virginia Cobb, and how about Dinesh D'Souza, the ex BF of Coulter and Ingraham, who recently wrote a book blaming 9-11 on the liberals in the U.S.?  His premise -- Bin Laden attacked us because he was disturbed at our Hollywood morals.  The Washington Post reviewer had fun with that one:  http://www.washingto...

These people, in my opinion, are psychologically troubled.  They may have had some harrowing experience, or ultra rigid upbringing, which has caused them to see life through a distorted religious/sexual lens.  They fear devils and suffer guilt where no ordinary person would.  It's no surprise that D'Souza, for example, became famous at Dartmouth for his attacks on female rights.  If one is terrified of women being in a powerful position, e.g., one way to deal with it psychologically is to write  a bunch of inventive verbal garbage justifying one's world view.  But that's the escape of weaklings.  If one realizes that one has an immoral opinion, or if one has ever done something morally unacceptable, the mature, moral response is to heal oneself and change oneself, not to lash out at others.

I gotta play devils advocate here (Jambon - 1/29/2007 11:13:01 AM)
Marshall is not making this up about the t-shirt.  Search for it in Google WITHOUT quotes...

http://www.google.co...

the first hit is an article from a Conservative rag about a company that sells those shirts.  the company does exist:

http://www.familyevo...

I'm not defending him.  I'm just pointing out that the shirt exists and is advertised on a website with a child model that happens to be African American.

He said he saw the kid. (Kathy Gerber - 1/29/2007 12:04:44 PM)
He did not say he saw a picture of the kid.  Big difference. And he doesn't say in the RTD that he saw a kid in such a shirt over a year ago. Hell, I saw a kid running down the street naked one time, but I'm not inviting a generalization.

"My dad's name is donor" is a sound bite invitation to a game of "Ain't it Awful" a la Eric Berne. Throw in race and you've got two carrots on the stick.

I am Ready to Blame it on Growth Hormones (Gordie - 1/29/2007 11:34:36 AM)
Obesity and Fast Foods

Growth Hormones are put in just about everything we eat today. From cattle, milk, poultry and even the fertilizer we use. It may even be in the Bio Solids that are about to be spread on the farms of Nelson County.
The Secretary of Health claims Obesity is caused by "Fast Foods" and lack of exercise. It seems a logical reason and most of the Public agree with such an assessment.

The FDA sort of backs them up and claims "Growth Hormones" are safe, yet they are outlawed in Europe. Yeah, I know what does Europe know? In certain aspects and areas of health they are far ahead of the United States. Why would Europe outlaw growth hormones?

A very interesting point that is presented, "young boys and young men are developing breasts". The ones that look like female breasts, and not those from muscle building.

The past 15 or so years and with the more growth hormones that are used, this is becoming more and more evident. Not coming across what is happening to females or if there is a study I have not found it, other then the obesity issue.

The Virginia Legislature writes legislation against "Gays". Other then genetics and other reasons, should they also be looking at our food supply? Are "Growth Hormones" the cause for allot of problems in society?

Eating fast food in the 1950's and forward and never having a weight problem one looks for another cause other then, believing a Government that constantly lies to the Public.

Growth Hormones changing the physics of people could also be changing their thinking.

Blame what on hormones? (Kathy Gerber - 1/29/2007 11:46:21 AM)
If you're talking about queerness, the only hormone I have comes in a little red pill.

Did you not read The article (Gordie - 1/29/2007 1:18:05 PM)
and just decided to blast hormones. The article is not about female hormones, it is about the GROWTH HORMONES put in the food we eat and the effect it could have on every aspect of our lives, especially children. It has nothing to do with sexual preference as a whole. It has to do with are these growth hormones changing some peoples sexual preference. Please keep an open mind.

I read what you wrote. (Kathy Gerber - 1/29/2007 7:01:52 PM)
I don't see sexual preference as a problem.  You generally mentioned growth hormones are a cause of societal problems - not development problems, health problems or medical problems, but societal problems.

And hormones in general have been introduced into the food chain.

More thoughts on Marshall (PM - 1/29/2007 2:04:20 PM)
I think these articles speak for themselves.  From an editorial in a New Mexico newspaper:

Republicans: Stop thinking about gay sex

Article Launched: 01/28/2007 12:00:00 AM MST

It seems to me Republicans spend more time thinking about gay sex than any other group of people in the known world even more so than gay people trying to find other gay people with whom to have sex. ***
