That's the chatter I heard today from a close staff in the Secretary of the Navy's office. We also got a mutual friend at the Pentagon in the Defense Secretary's office.
My friend, a Democrat is a Civil Service employee for the Department of Defense. The other friend is a Independent (who I convinced to vote for Webb) is a Bush appointee who is a senior staff for the Defense Secretary.
My friend in the Navy Secretary's office told me that there is real serious discussions that Chuck Robb is interested in working in the next administration at the Pentagon.
Apparently he's hinted so strongly there's even talk that he could be the next Secretary of the Navy or Secretary of Defense if a Democrat should win in 2008.
Chuck Robb is the former Governor of Virginia, then U.S. Senator. He was defeated by George Allen in 2000 for his Senate seat. Robb, is also a Marine Corps Veteran who was awarded the Bronze Star in Vietnam. He's married to President Lyndon Johnson's daughter Lynda since 1967.
From his Wikipedia entry:
Following his two terms in the Senate, Robb served on the Board of Visitors at the U.S. Naval Academy, and began teaching at George Mason University School of Law. On February 6, 2004, Robb was appointed co-chair of the Iraq Intelligence Commission, an independent panel tasked with investigating U.S. intelligence surrounding the United States' 2003 invasion of Iraq and Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. In 2006 he was appointed to serve on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. He also serves on the Iraq Study Group with former Secretary of State James A. Baker III. A New York Times article on October 9, 2006 credited Robb with being the only member of the group to venture outside the American controlled "green zone" on a recent trip to Baghdad. He is also a former member of the Trilateral Commission.
Chuck Robb and his wife Lynda were also huge support to Senator Webb's election effort. They held a private dinner to raise money hosting President Clinton at his home for Senator Webb.
