Letter to George Bush on SOTU "Negative Bounce"

Dear Dubya:

Sir, we just wanted to congratulate you on yet ANOTHER job well done.  In fact, if the line hadn't already been used by you, we might even say "Georgie, you're doing a heck of a job! Haha.

But seriously, we had a question we wanted to ask you. We figured that with your great intellectual curiosity and access to the brightest minds and best intelligence in government, you might be able to help us out.  See, the latest Newsweek poll, is saying that your State of the Union "bounce" actually went in the opposite direction than it should have.  According to Newsweek, not only did your approval rating NOT go up, as almost every President's does after his State of the Union address, it actually went DOWN and is now at its lowest level - 30% - in your presidency.

Obviously, this must be a terrible mistake by the nasty, terrible, evil, liberal media; how could anyone who watched your stirring, eloquent, brilliant speech the other night (loved the "Baby Einstein" product placement, by the way!) not love you?

Anyway, we're hoping you'll write back to us, or at least have your "brain" (heh) Karl Rove write back to us, and explain why the Newsweek poll is all wrong.  Or maybe you could have Dick Cheney explain to us how you are really at 90% approval, it's just that all the evidence in front of our eyes is wrong?  Anyway, we look forward to your reply. For now, we'll try to keep ourselves from worrying that your State of the Union speech went over about as well as your "bring 'em on" and "Mission Accomplished" comments did.

Sincerely,

Your biggest fans in Virginia,

The boys and girls from Raising Kaine

P.S. The other George, Allen that is, sends his regards, love and kisses! :)

Polls, schmolls! (Kindler - 1/27/2007 6:53:02 PM)
This administration doesn't care about polls, elections, democracy, etc. -- details, details!

David Ignatius caught the following remarkable exchange in an interview of Dick Cheney by Chris Wallace (yes, of Fox News, believe it or not):

Wallace: "By taking the policy you have, haven't you, Mr. Vice President, ignored the express will of the American people in the November election?"

The vice president: "Well, Chris, this president, and I don't think any president worth his salt, can afford to make decisions of this magnitude according to the polls. The polls change day by day."

Wallace: "This was an election, sir."

The vice president: "Polls change day by day, week by week."

This is actually becoming a yearly tradition (Chris Guy - 1/27/2007 7:14:08 PM)
I can't remember the last time Bush got a positive bounce from his SOTU.

Of course 85% of Fox News viewers thought the speech was 'Excellent'. And since they are Fair and Balanced, that Newsweek poll must be wrong.

Yeah, most excellent (Lowell - 1/27/2007 7:28:18 PM)
Especially loved the part when he said "Democrat" party.  Heh.

Webb's got the bounce (lynnkr - 1/27/2007 10:15:18 PM)
Looks like the George's A&W sure know how to put things in our fearless
Senator Webb's court and now he's got THE BOUNCE .

What a horrible tragedy. Our hearts are with you and your family.

No matter that we know how thoroughly things have gone awry, that's little comfort when someone dear to us pays the ultimate price.

pvogel -- my condolences on your loss (Catzmaw - 1/28/2007 4:13:07 PM)
and you have my promise that I will continue to write, research, and argue in favor of universal health coverage for all.  I've had no health coverage at times.  Two of my sisters have no health insurance.  When you don't have coverage you don't go to the doctor.  I neglected my health several times through my life because I was aware that if I saw a doctor and was diagnosed with a chronic condition I would not be able to get coverage for it or would have to pay far more than I could afford when I did get coverage and go through a lot of crap about pre-existing conditions.  A lack of coverage is a strong disincentive to get health care.

Someday perhaps, you will be able to post a diary about this.  Your tragedy will help bring this matter into focus and perhaps lead to improvements which will prevent it from happening to someone else's niece. In the meantime, though, your family is in mourning and two little children are without their mother.  I'm crying as I type this, at the thought of two motherless little ones.  You are a fine person and will do all you can to assist them, I'm sure, but such a loss is a terrible thing to bear.  God bless you and your family.
