See for the bill (SJ 352), sponsored by State Senator R. Creigh Deeds (D-25), to establish a bi-partisan redistricting committee.  The vote was 22-18, with some of the usual suspects - Jay O'Brien (R-39), Jeannemarie Devolites-Davis (R-34), and our old friend Benedict...er, Benny Lambert (R?D?I?-9) - voting against.  For more on this bill's passage, see James Martin's ecstatic account, Not Larry Sabato, and Vivian Paige.  A fine day for Democracy, in Virginia, and great work by Creigh Deeds!

(UPDATE BY ROB: The bill now moves on to the House. Perhaps some strategically applied pressure from the blogosphere might have an effect?)

Ha, thanks for the link :-p (James Martin - 1/23/2007 8:43:47 PM)
I think we should start calling Lambert (R-George Allen) because i think its more accurate.

It's not expected to pass the House (Chris Guy - 1/23/2007 10:47:52 PM)
Back when Howell was in the minority he wanted bi-partisan re-districting. Now that he's Speaker? I think you know the answer to that.
