Well, if this doesn't settle the Tysons tunnel debate once and for all, there's seriously something rotten in the state of Virginia. According to the Washington Post, the tunnel advocacy group, TysonsTunnel.org, has collected 12,000 signatures and raised $3.5 million, producing a cost estimate that is "roughly equal to the last known estimate for that portion of the line with an elevated track." As if that's not good enough:
Tunnel supporters said yesterday that Metro officials told them a tunnel would cost $5 million less per year to maintain. They also said it would take less time to construct.
As one person who worked on the study said, "Nobody can give me a good reason why we can't do a tunnel through Tysons." So let's stop screwing around with this vital, long-term project and DO IT RIGHT! (Note: the news that a massive overhaul of Tysons Corner has been approved makes the tunnel-option Metro project even more crucial than ever).
