Tough Questions for Bill Richardson

If you're a politician who just announced your run for President a few hours earlier, these are not exactly the types of questions you want to be getting.  The following are from Steven C. Clemons, Senior Fellow and Director of the American Strategy Program at New America Foundation. In other words, Clemons is a highly serious and respected guy.  Anyway, here are the questions:

Have you behaved inappropriately or not in public settings with female members of your government administration, jokingly or not? Have you gestured to female public servants and political appointees -- who work as colleagues with you -- and made lewd gestures, specifically pointing to them and then pointing at your crotch with a room full of media and other politicos there in the room?

I ask this not to demean or undermine Richardson.

I ask it because I was not in the room when this particular incident occurred but many others were -- and rumors have long swept around Santa Fe that Bill Richardson makes a constant festive joke out of demeaning women. These incidents don't have to do with the comments by Lt. Governor Diane Denish that Richardson is a "touchy" and "feely" Governor. They have to do with questions about a far more crude kind of gesture that demeans professional women.

Ouch.

Comments

These sorts of allegations have been made (Chris Guy - 1/21/2007 8:56:00 PM)
against Richardson before. Like the comment by the Lt. Governor, which is old news. But this is the first time a specific example has been given.

If this is true, I believe I'll look elsewhere for a candidate to support for '08.

These comments are probably true (pitin - 1/22/2007 1:16:11 AM)
I've heard from many first hand sources, not of any "innapropriate touching" but of Richardson "putting the moves on the ladies", even big donors at DNC events, you know the type where you pay $10,000 a seat and the Governor hits on you.

Sheesh, please look elsewhere.

it sounds like he's got (Jambon - 1/22/2007 1:49:22 AM)
more of a "William Donald Schaffer" problem than a "Bill Clinton" problem!

regardless, it's a big problem and a BIG turnoff.  sounds like the Richardson campaign is skidding of the tarmac before it even takes off.

Unsure what to make of him after reading this (Catzmaw - 1/21/2007 9:04:48 PM)
Some of it may be sour grapes; a lot of it looks like unspecific rumor mongering (no places, persons, or other particulars offered), but a lot of times where there's smoke there's fire.  But, by the same token, I haven't seen his defense.  Still waiting to see what comes of this.  If he really can't keep it in his pants it would affect my opinion of whether he should get the nomination.  Frankly, Bill Clinton, probably one of the most gifted politicians in our history, did an awful lot of damage with his philandering and I really don't want to go there again.

I agree n/t (Vivian J. Paige - 1/21/2007 9:57:11 PM)

I Agree Too (AnonymousIsAWoman - 1/21/2007 10:46:30 PM)
The last thing we need is a scandal du jour every time we open our newspapers or turn on our tv, and nowadays, with blogs, every time we boot up.  There are too many other very promising candidates out there.

how bout Vice-president? (presidentialman - 1/21/2007 11:12:13 PM)
Somehow, scandal or no scandal, I see him more of a Vice-President than actual presidential timber.

Everybody has dirt (DanG - 1/21/2007 11:41:42 PM)
I can't think of a single candidate that won't have skeletons in the closet if you dig deep enough.  I mean, Hillary is our frontrunner, right?  But she has scandals for worse than a few crude gestures.  All I'm saying is that everybody in this field will have a few dirty old stories; Obama, Clinton, Edwards, and everybody else included.

I am sick and tired of sex scandals (Chris Guy - 1/22/2007 12:22:14 AM)
I've heard a lot of "stories" about Hillary, Edwards or Obama, none of which has to do with anything that goes on between their legs.

Mr. Clean? (seveneasypeaces - 1/22/2007 1:03:55 AM)
When CSPAN was interviewing him yesterday he offered up that he has no scandals in his past.

Well, he's right (Chris Guy - 1/22/2007 3:01:08 AM)
This is more like his present, not his past.

Curious...what were Hillary's scandals? (Dianne - 1/22/2007 7:46:25 AM)
I know the Republican congress held investigation after investigation concerning the Clintons.  But where are the charges, convictions, from the government?  It's time that we stick to the facts and quit playing into the hands of the Republican operatives.

There weren't any. (Lowell - 1/22/2007 7:51:00 AM)
Just a bunch of overblown b.s. cooked up by the Republicans.

Say what you will, Lowell (DanG - 1/22/2007 11:51:39 AM)
But you KNOW that all those attacks on Bill, that the American populace bought, by th way, will be back to bite Hillary in the butt.  Hillary comes with a TON of baggage.  Yeah, the GOP cooked it up, but they did a good job of making the general populace believe it.

Hillary will most likely be our nominee.  And I'm just going to shake my head when all of those scandals to come back up.

Clark had given every indication that he'll run.  Although I don't think he has the campaign experience, and not enough governing experience, at least he's an honest soldier.  I may have to turn to him.

I wouldn't worry so much about what the (Lowell - 1/22/2007 11:58:14 AM)
right wing is going to do to our nominee.  If I were the right wing, I'd worry about what our nominee is going to do to THEM!  Democrats are energized, the Republicans are demoralized and splintering over Iraq, social issues, and much more.  I can't wait to take back the White House in two years and really turn this country around!

Also, I'd point out that they've thrown everything at Hillary Clinton but the kitchen sink (probably that too!) and she's still standing strong and proud.  As the saying goes, "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger." Well, Hillary Clinton is as strong as they come.

COMMENT HIDDEN (seveneasypeaces - 1/22/2007 12:52:23 PM)

This is very close to the edge (Lowell - 1/22/2007 1:19:04 PM)
of anti-Semitism.  If I see one more comment like this from you, I'm going to ban you.  Fair warning.

Can you defend it (seveneasypeaces - 1/22/2007 2:07:33 PM)
You can't defend it.  It is a well known fact that she is the candidate that Israel wants to run our country.  Banning the truth will reflect on you.  If Saudi Arabia had a candidate I would not agree either.  No country should be involved in our elections.

Long live Israel! (DanG - 1/22/2007 4:16:06 PM)
I'm going to say it over and over again.  We are not going to suffer the people of Israel simply to avoid terrorists actions.  That is EXACTLY what the terrorists want us to do.  We surrender Israel, they win.  They win, they take over the entire Middle East.

Long live Israel, and may her government stand strong against terrorist forces!

Long Live (seveneasypeaces - 1/22/2007 4:30:10 PM)
Everyone including Israel

I warned you. (Lowell - 1/22/2007 4:33:32 PM)
You are now banned.

Thanks Dan. (Lowell - 1/22/2007 4:32:44 PM)
I have never argued that Israel is perfect, but of course no nation is.  However, Israel is an amazing, vibrant country, a Democracy in the heart of the authoritarian Middle East, and a nation that is truly fighting some of the worst actors in the world - Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, etc.  And as bad as the situation is with the Palestinians, I would argue strongly that Israel has been far more restrained than, oh, let's say Syrian President Hafez al Asad against the Muslim Brotherhood (remember how he leveled his own city, Hama?) or King Hussein of Jordan (remember his "Black September" against the Palestinians?), or Saddam Hussein against the Shi'ites and Kurds (remember how he killed hundreds of thousands of them, used poison gas agains them?), or the Algerian military against its own people (remember the 150,000-200,000 dead from their "civil war" in the 1990s?), or...well, we could go on and on and on and on.

The point is, Israel's not perfect, but it's a shining beacon of light in the benighted Middle East.  Which is just one reason I join with Dan in proudly declaring, "Long live Israel!"
