Reid and Senators Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) said the new Senate Democratic majority is committed to taking action to address the problem of global warming. The senators cited Arlington's recent decision to lower the County's greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent by 2012 from a 2000 base as an example of the steps localities are taking across the nation to lower greenhouse gases. They also praised Arlington's commitment to purchasing hybrid cars for its fleet, and said they supported the introduction of hybrid cars into the federal government's vehicle fleet.
Speaking of global warming, the New York Times has an excellent article today on the competing plans in Congress to put a cap on U.S. carbon emissions. Here they are, in convenient graphical format (y-axis is in billions of tons of C02; all three plans represent a major drop from current projected U.S. carbon dioxide emissions of over 13 billion tons in 2050, up from about 7 billion tons now):
Obviously, Sanders-Boxer and Lieberman-McCain are the best plans if you actually want to stop global warming.
