Very poignant and worth a read...

Tom Lehner, formerly Chuck Robb's campaign manager, now heading Webb's transition team, delivers a toast: "Two-and-a-half years ago, Jim called and said he was interested in running for the Senate against George Allen. I said, 'Okay, but it'll change your life. You'll have to do things you won't like 24/7 and the sad thing is you won't win.' He did everything opposite of what I advised him and now here he is."

a terrific read (teacherken - 1/17/2007 3:46:34 PM)
giving you an even broader sense of Jim - like being on the board of a ballet company/ school

And please note the key part  -  about the quality of his integrity.

Agree with you completely (Catzmaw - 1/17/2007 4:14:56 PM)
I stumbled onto this earlier today while looking for information about Webb's SOTU appearance.  It gives a lot of dimension to one Friedkin describes as "the most complex, principled man I've ever known."

Been lurking lately, trying to give Mrs. LCD & my boy extra attention after putting so much time into campaigns lately... plus we have been getting 'lil LCD into a special diet (gluten free, casein free) that is supposed to help kids with autism.

Rules of Enagement (Josh - 1/17/2007 4:16:17 PM)
I got "Rules of Engagement" out of the library this week and watched it last night.

It's a complex and difficult film, like "A Few Good Men" with an extra dozen IQ points.

Anyone who doubts Jim Webb's enduring dedication to the Marine corps need only sit through this film.  Clearly, there is no higher calling than service and no greater expression than loyalty.

Yeah, Virginians can be proud of our new Senator.  The best of what America has to offer.

once a Marine .... (teacherken - 1/17/2007 5:13:52 PM)
my own service was much less intense, being strictly stateside w/no combat.

But just the experience of training is transforming.  For the 70+ in my bootcamp platoon, having transitioned from being called TURDs (for Trainees Under Recruit Discipline) to being called upon graduation "Marines" was a significant achievement.

Marines are what they are because those who lead them, officers or NCOs, are expected to lead  by example, lead from the front.  Those who have ever experienced such a leader find it inspiring.  To do it in combat as did Jim Webb is something that marks those who have served under such leadership for life.  That is why the incredibly loyalty of those who experienced Jim's leadership, whether Mac as a radio operator, or Col. Wyly as a superior officer.

Semper Fi !!!

Memories (DukieDem - 1/17/2007 5:44:18 PM)
Makes me think of Mac talking about Webb in the "Leadership We Can Trust" video.

"Jim Webb is gonna enlighten Washington. If he is elected, they are gonna see honesty like they have not seen honesty in a looong time. Jim Webb cannot be bought. Lobbyists cannot influence him. If he doesn't beleive it, it won't happen"

A TOAST to Jim WEBB - OUR SENATOR!!! (ub40fan - 1/17/2007 9:27:59 PM)
