Tonight was the kickoff event for Chap Petersen's run against incumbent State Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis (R-34th). The Fairfax Old Town Hall was packed with supporters, including politicians like Jim Webb, Leslie Byrne, Gerry Connolly, David Bulova, David Marsden, Chuck Caputo, Jim Scott, Phil Kellam, Ingrid Morroy, Bruce Roemmelt, Morris Meyer, and Janet Oleszek. The master of ceremonies was Chap's Law Firm partner Scott Surovell, who did an excellent job as always. Bloggers in attendance included Ben Tribbett, Kenton Ngo, "Dannyboy," and several others (including Eric and Greg from RK, who photographed and videotaped the event, respectively).
Jim Webb spoke first in support of Chap, mentioning their meeting over a year ago. Webb particularly thanked Chap, Leslie Byrne, and Ingrid Morroy (who did a musical duet with her sister - "Vote for Chap on Election Day!"). Webb called this a great kickoff to what will be a great year for the Democratic Party of Virginia. As he has so many times before, Webb spoke about bringing people back into the Democratic Party and about fair governance. He listed some top Democratic priorites: ethics reform, raising the minimum wage, Medicare Part D drug reform, approving the 9/11 Commission Report recommendations and implementing them, support for stem cell research, action on energy/global warming, relieving the financial burden of college tuition, and providing "GI Bill" benefits to today's veterans. Webb said that he was "pleased to be standing here with Chap," joked about not being short, and said something funny like "watch what you say or you may end up in my next book." My notes weren't very good, unfortunately, but hopefully the video will come to the rescue later this evening! :)
Gerry Connolly talked about 2007 being a critical year, and how we needed to build on our successes from last year. Noting that we needed to pick up 4 seats in the Senate to take control, Connolly declared, "Chap, we're counting on you this November."
Leslie Byrne was enthusiastic in her remarks, urging Chap to "do us proud, not do us loud" - a clear jab at the incumbent, Devolites Davis.
Chap gave an excellent speech, also talking about how this was a critical year in Virginia. According to Chap, if Dems take back the State Senate this year, it will be the first time since 1900 that a legislative chamber in a southern state has flipped from "red" to "blue." I've got to check on that one; it's amazing if accurate!
According to Chap, the #1 issue facing the state is transportation. We need to "change the vision" for transportation, not just lay "miles and miles of more asphalt." We need to promote public transport and better land use planning. Chap declared that he is a strong environmentalist, but that this is "not about bashing developers." Instead, Chap wants to encourage people to do the right thing - smart growth, conservation, and alternative fuels. Chap specifically talked about shifting trucking cargo onto interstate rail as a way to relieve congestion, calling this an "outside the box" solution that the current incumbent won't do.
Besides transportation, Chap sounded not unlike Jim Webb, talking about economic justice as a Democratic core value, economic fairness (specifically, exempting vehicles worth under $12,000 from the personal property tax), and ethics in public service. On the latter point, Chap did not directly criticize his opponent, but he did speak about the importance of getting into public service for the right reasons - to improve the community, not to improve one's own social standing. In the end, Chap asserted that "there will come a time in this campaign where we will draw distinctions" with his opponent. Turning to Leslie Byrne, he declared, "united, we can't be stopped." Finally, Chap thanked his wife, noting emotionally that his goal was to "be the man she thinks I can be." Very powerful.
P.S. Excellent buffet and wine selection; can't argue with that! :)
In previous campaigns Chap Peterson has failed to elicit strong support from liberals due to his position on the marriage amendment. I want to make this clear: as Benjamin Franklin once said, "Either we hang together or we hang separately." Part of the GOP's key to winning in years past was uniting their interest groups.
All progressives/liberals must realize that we cannot advancce an agenda that promotes the common good unless we are willing to compromise from time to time. If Chap is able to win (which is very likely) then we only need three more seats for a majority in the state senate.
We have work to do.
A same-sex couple in similar circumstances cannot even do that. Their insurance choices are severely constrained and the ailing partner is faced with indigency and a very real loss of dignity during his or her final years. Perhaps their life is even shortened because of decisions such as feeding tube or not during a crisis.
Personal finances are a major factor in health care decisions, those things happen and those are the realities. A same-sex couple is going to hang separately anyway. It's not difficult to ask for compromise when it isn't your life that is on the line.
I hope that makes some sense, because I could care less about marriage per se at the personal level. The amendment does not affect marriage. It is a hate amendment. And it affects the economic well-being of same-sex couples.
If it's any consolation I do not live in Mr. Petersen's district. I doubt if he remembers it, but we had dinner with him once some years ago at a fundraiser for Al Weed in Lynchburg.
Maybe this is a good time for someone to explain to these candidates that the amendment is not, and was not, about protecting marriage. Furthermore, it will be useful to have their views on Marshall's divorce bill, too.
Thanks to Aaron there are pictures ... here they are:

Consider 40,000 people getting a 2 dollar raise is less then 200 million dolars a year for 40,000 people, where as 1 individual recieves 200 million from those same 40,000 peoples blood, sweat and hardships.
Anyone have a write up of the blogger gathering today?
Kenton, NLS, Ambivalent Mumblings, Lowell, Used2BNeutral and Rebecca were there. Mike Burns and Morris Meyer (candidate for 40th Dist) were there. Two other delegates also arrived to say hi, including David Bulova (37th). Sorry I am not remembering everyyone. I'm sure the bloggers will fill out my list. I was the one looking casually fabulous ;-)
We were there till we made a caravan to the Chaps event. That event was packed. I had to leave after 20-30 minutes. I think the bloggers returned to the studio for the show, perhaps late because Chap's speech was a little late while he waited for some guests slowed by the awful rain.
I can't wait till Inside Scoop puts the link to the show up. Kenton had his video so watch for that to go up on 750volts.
As for the rest of the "Gathering", I think a good time was had by all. Chuck Caputo and Dave Marsden made some impromtu comments. Morris Myer spoke to technology and environmental issues. I think we had a pretty good turnout that filled our conference/training room even considering the six other activities that popped up Sunday. These other activities weren't scheduled six weeks ago when we did the gathering. In fact, most of these six unexpected conflicts weren't scheduled until the last two weeks. I think Mary Lee got some great still pictures and I will try to get them to put them up also.
Teacher Ken and Rebecca both did a great job on the show as you will see in the video later. The rest trickled back in after Chap's event ran almost an hour late and the blinding rain made a ten minute 5 mile car ride turn back into almost 30 minutes.
Many thanks also to Eric, Kenton and the others who left Chap's activity early to help us get the TV show live by 6:30......
