header.jpgAlthough he has already begun reaching out to the voters and participated in a live blog, the campaign kickoff event for Morris Meyer will be held at the house of Sharon and Seth Stark tomorrow - Saturday, January 6 - from 2pm until 5pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear the campaign's message "of preserving excellence and innovation in education, addressing the immediate and long-term needs of transportation and protecting the environmental standards that make Virginia a great place to live and work."

You can also read more about Morris by visiting his website at www.morrismeyer.com, but below the flap is part of what Morris has to say about why he is running.

As a northern Virginia father I am deeply concerned that the House Republican Caucus is attempting to solve our transportation crisis by draining money from education. As a small-businessman and software researcher I realize that we must maintain our vibrant economy by investing in transportation and continuing Virginia's reputation as the best place to do business in America.

In 2004 I ran for Congress against Rep. Joe Barton, the House Energy and Commerce Chairman and one of the chief global warming deniers in Congress. This was in deep-red Texas - before the 50-state strategy was in place. Next year I will take on another cog in the Republican machine to dismantle government, Tim Hugo of the House of Delegates finance and transportation committees.

We have been building a great campaign team and would like to invite you to our campaign kick-off to hear our message of preserving excellence and innovation in education, addressing the immediate and long-term needs of transportation and protecting the environmental standards that make Virginia a great place to live and work.

Here is my story:

I was moved to run when my daughter came down with early stages of asthma and Rep. Barton was allowing the cement kilns to burn medical and toxic waste that was poisoning our community.

My campaign halted Rep. Barton's plans to exempt the region's worst industrial polluters by uniting environmental activists, concerned citizens and local conservative media outlets against his efforts. My campaign helped create Democratic groups including the North Texas Democratic Alliance and Tejano Democrats, and rebuilt local Democratic infrastructure and decreased Barton's margin of victory 11% over the previous campaign cycle.

After the election I cultivated and nurtured Democrats locally including one Congressional candidate, three state house candidates, two city council candidates and one county commissioner. I recruited dozens of new precinct chairs and was instrumental in providing the precinct level analysis to enable our DNC representative's local efforts.

My wife Teri, the love of my life, was born in Washington, DC and has lived in Fairfax County, Virginia for the past 30 years. After the campaign we began our courtship and traveled back and forth between Texas and Virginia every other weekend. Early this year I was able to move to Virginia and in June we were married in a local church in Clifton.

Even before moving to Virginia, I became active with local Fairfax County Democratic organizations and campaigns. In June the House Democratic Caucus reached out to me to take on one of the chief obstacles to Governor Kaine's transportation plans. Del. Hugo has been unopposed for the last two cycles in a district that is steadily trending blue. I have a long history of activism in the Democratic Party and on behalf of Democratic causes and Del. Hugo has already put the word out that an experienced candidate threatens him.

Love that disclaimer, by the way, looks sort of familiar! :)  So, when are you going to add RK to the Morris Meyer blogroll?  Thanks.
