NLS Reports: Katie Couric Takes on Virgil Goode

Great catch by Ben Tribbett on this story.  According to Couric, Virgil Goode's anti-Muslim bigotry (not to mention his bizarre conflation of immigration with religion) makes her "embarrassed" to say that Virginia is her home state.  Sad to say, it's hard to blame her for that feeling.  The thing is, we'd all be a lot less embarrassed if the Republican Party of Virginia, the so-called "moderate" Republicans like Tom Davis and Frank Wolf, and the Republican blogosphere would all condemn Virgil Goode for his bigoted remarks.  Sadly, I do NOT recommend that anyone hold their breath on that score.

I put this on Kos (phriendlyjaime - 1/5/2007 2:06:06 PM)

I don't care (CommonSense - 1/5/2007 8:26:48 PM)
who does it as long as it gets done. Keep it up and keep it out there. Keep it going by whatever means possible/necessary. As embarrassing as it is to have this person as my representative, this story needs to stay up front and active.
It is my sincere hope that it will not even begin to slow down until the republicans respond appropriately.

yes, keep it up front! (fix_it - 1/6/2007 8:17:58 PM)
lets hear virgil's explanations again. let's hear his party's explanations. I think virgil shot himself in the foot.

Emily Couric (vadem - 1/5/2007 10:58:32 PM)
Katie's sister Emily, an up and coming Democrat in Virginia before she died of a cancer related illness, was from the 5th District. Perhaps that's why Katie has taken this on.  I believe Emily was preparing to run for the State Senate (not positive on this) when she became ill.  One of the signs on our committee office wall is Couric for Senate.

Emily (Ingrid - 1/5/2007 11:40:56 PM)
was State Senator for six years representing the 25th senate district.  She was in the race for Lt. Gov. in 2000 when she had to drop out due to illness.  Had Emily lived, she would have been a fine Governor!

She is still missed very much here in Central Virginia. (CommonSense - 1/6/2007 10:32:59 AM)
My comment was directed more towards the responses to Katie Couric on DK which I thought were a bit much.

Thanks for the correction (vadem - 1/6/2007 10:49:07 AM)
I was living out of the state from '93 to '03, so did not know about her during the time she was in state politics, just that she was a very popular and talented Democrat.

Emily : One classy lady (hereinva - 1/6/2007 12:46:13 AM)
I still have my June 2000 Norfolk Democratic Convention Credential with an Emily Couric sticker on it. I met her in person for the first time at that convention, and she emulated all that is good in public service. She was one classy lady, and would have made one excellent governor or congresswoman or senator.
