Snow?

According to the National Weather Service, here's the forecast for Thursday night and Friday (this one's for Northern Virginia, but it's almost the same for Richmond, Charlottesville, and much of Virginia).:

Thursday Night: Snow likely, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with a low near 25. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Friday: A chance of snow, mainly before noon. Partly cloudy, with a high around 36. North wind between 5 and 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

I grew up in New England, and I love snow - especially the first major snow of the winter.  Now, it looks like we might be getting some as a coastal storm winds up.

...A LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW IS LIKELY LATE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY...

A STORM MOVING FROM THE MIDWEST INTO PENNSYLVANIA WILL INTERACT
WITH A COASTAL LOW MOVING UP THE COAST FROM GEORGIA. THE RESULT
WILL LIKELY BE SNOW FOR THE MID ATLANTIC BEGINNING THURSDAY
NIGHT AND ENDING FRIDAY MORNING. SEVERAL INCHES OF ACCUMULATION
ARE POSSIBLE. MONITOR THE LATEST FORECAST AS THIS EVENT DRAWS
CLOSER...AND STAY ALERT FOR ANY WATCHES OR WARNINGS THAT MAY
BECOME NECESSARY.

Now here's a question I've always wondered:  why does everyone start eating loaves of bread and drinking gallons of milk the minute the snow starts falling?  And what's with the toilet paper deal, anyway?  Does anyone else find it as amusing as I do to hear the newscasters talking excitedly about people jamming supermarkets for "bread, milk, and toilet paper" as soon as there's a forecast of snow?

In many ways, Abraham Lincoln was the first politican to enunciate the basic principles which modern Democrats fight for and right wing Republicans fight against.

If Lincoln were alive today, he'd be a Democrat.

Here, for example are some words you'll hear revered by all Democrats and assailed by at least the radicals who now own the GOP:

"[Government] should do what people cannot do by individual effort." - Lincoln

I love the snow because the run on milk, bread, and toilet paper causes a mark down on gourmet goods. Nothing like curling up next to a warm faux fire place with some 1/2-price Brie, fancy-smancy crackers, porterhouse steaks, and bottles and bottles of marked down wine...

Um. Yes, this is an outrage. But Douglass died in 1895. They're quoting from the 1941 edition of his life. No word on which of the versions it represents. So you'll need to think about the changes in American life since BEFORE the Civil War (which is when Douglass published the first version of his life), which means your points stand, but even more strongly.

Seth:  That's interesting, because dozens of other people I've talked to or heard from feel differently.  I'm not saying we're definitely right, but I'm still waiting for an innocent explanation of what the *@#$% that thing is, and what the #$%^@! it is doing there.

Loyal Republican:  Perhaps, but I would point out that it was a VERY different Republican Party back then.  In many ways, the party's "flipped" after the 1960s, with the Republicans picking up the former "Dixiecrats" and the Dems the former northeastern and Californian "liberal Republicans."  In other words, one could argue that today's Republicans are closer to the Democrats of Douglass' time, while today's Dems are closer to the Lincoln (and Teddy Roosevelt, and even Dwight D. Eisenhower) Republicans...

I think the point of the sketch is to reinforce the Republican Party as ever-alert and on the lookout for shady characters who resemble the drawing.

Just a little preemptive campaign, that?s all folks!

To be honest guys, if I had seen that picture without any text, I never would have known it was a Black person. To me it just looks like some guy with his hair standing on end. I'm not even sure why it's on their website. It's just stuck there at the bottom.

Lowell, I guess I should have visited the web page before writing my above post. You guys are absolutly right. While I don't consider the actual drawing offensive...the use of it on the page falls pretty much under the "What the F@#k?!?!" category. I should have taken the time to check it out before spouting off. Now that I've chastised myself ....has anyone asked the Chesterfield County Republican Committee just what is the purpose of the drawing on their page? I'd be open to innocent explanations as well because on the surface...it just doesn't fit with anything else on their page.

Okay guys. You have a drawing of a black guy with a scared look on his face....???? Please explain why this is racist? Is there a context in which it is being used (maybe advocating burning crosses on lawns) that makes it racist or are you saying its racist because the drawing is of a black person, posted by a repulican, therefor it has to be racist? Again if it is being used in a racist manner then fine, jump all over them, but in my opinion, without more info you are sounding like a bunch of hand wringing chicken littles(never mind that chickens dont have hands). Use some wisdom in choosing your fights or you will start to look ridiculous.

Why wouldn't drug us (Josh - 4/4/2006 11:27:50 PM)
Why wouldn't drug use skyrocket?  Kids know the deal.  It's a dog eat dog world now more than ever.  You either viciously claw your way to the top, or you're left at the bottom with the rest of the sorry suckers who choose against corruption.

It's a tough world to face and kids are given neither guidance, nor hope by the current "leadership".

When excellence is defined only by a test score, kids will seek authenticity elsewhere or simply drop out.  That's why Japan has a huge problem with suicide amongst 5 year olds.  If they start out on the wrong foot, they're screwed.

After the conference, I stuck around c'ville until the early afternoon Sunday.

In the mall I ran in to Steve Kolesar, and David Slutsky, both of whom are running for office in November.

I'll write more on this elsewhere, but I just have to commend Steve Kolesar and David Slutsky
for standing up and running for office.  If I were still living in Central Virginia, they'd have
my vote.  As it is, they have my kudos, support, and all the best wishes I can offer.

Dear Ms. Duckett,
Your facts were true, your fears were true, your sadness is true.  Here in Illinois there are towns and counties with the exact same problems.  Your words are universal in their reflections of life in these times in America.  As a retired teacher, someone who grew up in the 50's where we seemed to be really developing a country for everyone, I apologize that we are leaving our country in such a dilemma, in such hopelessness, in such agony.  We should have paid better attention.  You and your generation give me hope.  My prayers and best wishes are with you.
