Catch me on BBC's "World Have Your Say" at 1:30

Sorry for the shameless self-promotion, but I'll be one of the bloggers on this BBC program this afternoon talking about the Virgil Goode controvery. The segment is slated for 1:30 - 1:45 EST, cell phone signal permitting.

I'll be squaring off with some pro-Virgil bloggers. There's a link on the show's page to listen live, so let me know how I do.

(UPDATE: Waldo has a good round-up of press reactions here. Hopefully I'll get a chance to post some of the better ones here later. The WaPo editorial is especially good - no pun intended).

(UPDATE: My part is done! I squared off with Republitarian. Made the points that fearing a Muslim majority in Congress is a crazy fear because the demographics will never get there, and that equating "Muslim" as synonymous for some unspoken evil is irrational. Using the extreme minority to define that entire religion would be like using the KKK to define Christians. Hope I made my case effectively!)

Virginia's senior senator, Republican John Warner, said in a statement Thursday that he respects the right of members of Congress to freely "exercise the religion of their choice, including those of the Islamic faith utilizing the Quran."

A majority of KKK members are NOT violent.

If Muslims take over the gay people and women better watch out because they're gonna be the first to die.

And wow - David Duke IS an extremist - there's no getting around that.

The display the shear crazyness of the Right wing thinking.  Debbie was a gift.

sometimes I wonder about our Publius.. (Kathy Gerber - 12/22/2006 3:15:32 PM)
The real Virgil's (author of the Aeneid) name was
Publius Vergilius Maro.

They just keep digging. (relawson - 12/22/2006 3:16:25 PM)
He said something stupid.  Republicans seem to just keep digging a deeper whole.  I don't understand why he doesn't simply apologize, and let this story die.

This can't end well for him.  Republican leadership, if they are smart, would come out strong right now against this.  They don't like to attack their own until the bitter end, it seems.  Just look at Foley and a score of other Republicans caught in scandal.  They wait until all hope is lost.

Oh well, it's not my job to tell Republicans to stop digging.  My guess is that this guy may wind of resigning, or asked to resign by Republican leadership.

Speaking of digging - where are Democrats with Jefferson?  When should we expect the party to take him to the woodshed on the money in the freezer issue?  This is a litmust test for me and Democrats - are they really serious about corruption?

I was on after you (dday - 12/22/2006 3:25:39 PM)
You certainly did a better job than I.  Alas, I was paired up with Debbie Schlussel, who is such a lunatic paranoid that there's literally nothing to say to penetrate the twisted logic.  I was happy I mentioned her ridiculous column about Obama.

Disagree (Kathy Gerber - 12/22/2006 4:06:12 PM)
That was a point that needed to be made dday - you did a good job.

Goode job! (Kindler - 12/22/2006 3:44:22 PM)
Rob, sorry I missed you, but I just wanted to say you've been doing a great job covering this story and thanks for getting our message out to the world -- literally!

$64,000 dollar question (Newport News Dem - 12/22/2006 4:20:03 PM)
WHEN WILL AN AUDIO CLIP BE MADE AVAILABLE!!!!!!!

We want to hear the segment.

Standard Republican Racism (DukieDem - 12/22/2006 4:26:25 PM)
A hallmark of the Bush Presidency seemed to be that the new Republican Party was not racially insensitive, that they respected and valued minorities.

Between Senator Allen's macaca gaffe, Senator Lott's election as Minority Whip (symbolism is priceless), the ads run against Harold Ford, Congressman Tancredo's remarks that Miami looks like a "3rd world country", and now Congressman Goode's letter, is there any doubt that the 'R' in Republican stands for racist?

3rd world nations are what they are because of economics (Caesonia - 12/22/2006 8:11:01 PM)
not colour. I think it is entirely reasonable to look around us and say we look like a 3rd world nation and question if thats what we want.

Poverty is poverty. If we are importing poverty from third world nations, running down wages and over burdening the social fabric, we look like a 3rd world nation. It has nothing to do with colour or race or gender.

Unfortunately, many people of colour happen to reside in or come from 3rd world nations, where they are by far the majority.

We cannot let PC blind us to reality, which says poverty is ugly in any colour.....

Goode is stupid, becuase immigration DOES need to be discussed. (Caesonia - 12/22/2006 8:06:46 PM)
Obviously, Goode's stance on immigration is not only the hallmark of complete ignorance, its just the wrong focus for an immigration dicussion.

1) Immigration policy needs to be overhauled, there is no doubt. Sorry, but 250 years ago, you kissed your close ones goodbye, and you went. None of this bringing chains of extended family so you can have an ethnic ghetto to make you feel " at home." if you want to be home, you stay home, and fix that. If you want something new, well, that means you have to embrace it on your own. Spouse and under age children, and thats it.

2)Its worthwhile to consider the oath that people take when they are naturalized. Remember Teddy Roosevelt.."there is only room for one flag...." Its legit to be concerned that we might be bringing in more intolerance, as fundamentalist Muslims are as intolerant as our own fundamentalist Christians. So they have to swear to uphold a secular state, and to be tolerant of things like homosexuals.

3) Immigrants have to come in the front door, and respect the laws of this nation. If you steal someone's identity, you have committed a crime that would see a natural citizen doing some serious jail time. Its a big crime. I don't care what employers say, its a crime committed only for the profit of those involved, and no native should suffer by this. This has to stop. An immigrant who cannot respect such laws does not respect the country they are moving into, and should not be allowed to benefit from it.Frankly, their employers should be deported with them.

4) There is NO labour shortage. Americans have been forced out of jobs by illegal and H-1b Visa holders until they no longer have the skills. Then the employers complain. BS. UNtil a real hard look has been taken on skills needs and development, the immigration numbers should not be changed. When completed, they should move either down or up based on those findings.

The rest, like Virgil Goose, is bullocks.
