Virgil's second huge scandal of 2006 goes prime time

Virgil gets involved with shady dealings and corrupt businessmen. Virgil makes offensive comments aimed at minorities. That's two huge scandals in one year - quite an accomplishment. I'm sure the 5th District is proud of their Representative.
Speaking of proud, because he thinks these thoughts and is happy to publish them to his constituents, I'd guess Virgil Goode is so excited that his xenophobic beliefs were picked up by the national media, by way of the AP. (H/T Waldo). Maybe the xenophobia lobby's money will start pouring into his campaign coffers? He needs something to replace that MZM cash.

I am in the 5th (CommonSense - 12/20/2006 8:52:44 PM)
and proud doesn't even begin to cover it. Proud? Proud that many here in the 5th were right about him all along? Proud that he really is as bad as we said/thought he was? Proud that we now have to face another two years being represented by a bigoted do-nothing flaming idiot? I think not.
Those in the 5th who have been working for four years to dump this arrogant self-serving legacy fool will obviously have to work even harder, and it would be nice to have a little help from higher up in the food chain next time around.
I would like to think that now with his true colors flying there would be a ground-swell of opposition, but the past four years have taught me differently. He is entrenched, he panders to his base, and he very effectively hides from opposition. His remarks are nothing more than a slap in the face to those who would have retired him and this is his nasty little boy payback for us making him spend money and work to stay in office.
And unless he manages to get himself indicted, there isn't a damn thing we can do about it but wait, and try again in 2008. And we will.
Amen (Gordie - 12/21/2006 7:52:27 AM)
Amen
It's really national now (Silver Fox - 12/21/2006 10:16:48 AM)
Just watched some of the morning national news programs and Goode's xenophobic screed is getting a lot of attention. Hey, 5th District, is this REALLY how you want to be perceived locally, statewide and nationally? If not, join your local Democratic committee and any grassroots movements in your area, get active and in 2008 work to rectify your error. And if the Republican Party is smart (not saying it is, just "if...") it will be taking a BIG step away from ole Virge's side. If the leadership doesn't make a statement condemning his racist, xenophobic ravings, they will be tarred with his same brush. Any bets on whether they'll keep mum and hope the whole things blows over? Our job is to make sure it doesn't because if they let this bigoted, un-American, disgusting hate-mongering go unanswered they become complicit by their silence. This is an issue that is far too important to be silenced by a partisan stonewall and they have to be held to account.
Thanks Silverfox (Gordie - 12/21/2006 11:48:34 AM)
for the encouragement. I am still thinking about how to go about attacking him publicly with letters to the editor. In other words I am looking forward to reading lots of comments. Let me boost a little about my latest "Letter to the Editor" after a cartoon was run in the NCT. It was just published in today's paper. You all who wrote in gave me the words for the letter posted below.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“How’s your boy”
Nelson County residents have written to surrounding newspapers about this subject, but nothing was in the Nelson County Times till this paper ran a grotesque, one sided, cartoon about Jim Webb.
Marines are men and women, sons and daughters, fighting for the honor, integrity, and principles of this country. Some putting their lives on the line, like the week before Jim, jr’s vehicle was riding next to a vehicle that was blown up by an IED. For any commander-in-chief to call any member of any branch of service a “boy” or a “girl” shows total disrespect for the military he commands.
In some circles of our society the word “boy” is meant as an insult to certain segments of our society. Anyone who uses the terms; “dead or alive”, “bring them on” and “mission accomplished” indicates they travel in those circles of our society that use the word “boy” as an insult. As an intellect, Jim Webb knew when such an insult was being directed at him and his family.
My sympathy goes to Jim Webb to be put in such a circumstance and yet to have the courage to uphold the highest principles of the office he was elected too. It is a shame we have a President who cannot uphold those high principles.
When the response “That’s not what I asked” came back, I am sure Jim definitely knew the President was trying to insult him and his family.
Besides a LTE (Silver Fox - 12/21/2006 2:21:56 PM)
Gordie, I had a few thoughts on how to respond to this letter from ole Virge. Besides letter(s)to the editor(s) I personally would be happy to contribute some duplicating and postage costs so that the local Democratic committee of the areas ole Virge represents cound send out a facsimile copy of the letter with a simple message: "Is this what you want your Congressman to be saying as he represents you?" and send it to all the Republicans and independent voters you could identify. I don't agree with other sentiments expressed earlier that those folks in the 5th secretly (or not so secretly) AGREE with the sentiments Goode expressed. I have more faith in the basic tolerance of my fellow American and Virginia citizens and prefer to believe that they do NOT espouse such vicious bigotry, if they know about it. My feeling is, why not carry the fight to Goode right now? Sure the 5th is stuck with him for 2 years but it could be a very uncomfortable 2 years for him if we start swinging the hammer now and let his own words tell the tale. Run up a bunch of fliers with the same message and post them lots of places, hand them out at grocery stores like we do campaign materials, do a lit drop, but with a reverse target...the Republicans and independents. The Dems already know what he is. If you decide to give it a shot, let me know where to send a contribution.
Sounds Like (Gordie - 12/22/2006 9:57:34 AM)
it will be on the NCDC Jan. meeting agenda.
Strikng back (Silver Fox - 12/22/2006 11:48:35 AM)
As I said, I personally would contribute some postage and duplicating money and I would be glad to raise a call for additional private contributions to support a local response directed at voters in Goode's area when I go to my local district meeting in January. Any idea how much it would cost to do a targeted mailing?

Silver Fox, NCDC won't be meeting until January, and I believe that the 5th CD may be of more appropriate scope anyway:

Shame (charleyconrad - 12/21/2006 10:30:54 AM)
Another chained dog to hatred and bigotry showing true colors in Virginia. It is so sad that we keep having to see this type of mentality when there are so many more important issues that need to be addressed. I deplore discrimination, and discrimination against one group is discrimination against us all. Last time I checked hatred, bigotry and discrimination was not a "family value".

that the guy is from detroit, born in detroit, and converted to muslim. so what is the big deal that immigration would help. and believe me that part of va deserves virgil. they are a bunch of bigots down there in them there woods.
Well, not EVERYONE in the 5th is a bigot, there, "lgb30856"... (cycle12 - 12/21/2006 1:47:02 PM)
In fact, one of Jim Webb's staunchest supporters, a fine, local young Democratic man by the name of Joe Stanley (remember the excellent Webb campaign video that he assembled and produced and that debuted in Charlottesville for the Stephen King, John Grisham, Jim Webb event there?) lives and works hard for our Party and its beliefs in the 5th Congressional District.
Incidentally, I'm proud to live in the 9th Congressional District, by far the most rural area of Virginia, and to have been represented by Democrat Rick Boucher for lo these many years.
So please narrow the stroke of your brush just a little for us poor, ignorant, backwoods types...
Thanks!

The Fifth (Houdon - 12/21/2006 1:04:11 PM)
So long as the chief export of Nelson County continues to be crazy candidates, Virgil will remain safe in his seat.
I think what many of us in places like Richmond and Charlottesville are missing is that Virgil won't lose any votes over this issue. Many in his district, publicly or privately, agree with the sentiment behind that letter, if not the tenor.

Your comment "many in his district agree" is probably true, but let me add most do not feel this way. For some reason they do not speak out. I am hoping somehow, say with the DPVA web site they may get a voice.
