Mark Warner '08 rumors building

It sounding like the rank speculation has been upgraded to pure rumor:Now that Hotline has published the rumor, my sources have released me from my pledges ... Mark Warner has, in fact, been rethinking his decision to leave the Presidential race for several weeks now. Warner's going to wait and see how this race plays out -- does Obama enter the race and can he keep momentum if he does? Does John Edwards keep his Iowa lead? Does Vilsack have any impact? Does Gore get in?
For now, Warner remains out ... but he has the apparatus in place (the Forward Together PAC hasn't gone anywhere) and the ability to raise funds quickly. So consider it a tentative no, for now.
I'm sure these guys are getting excited. In the meantime, my personal "doubt" has been downgraded accordingly to a definite "wait and see" mode.

As Newt (Gordie - 12/18/2006 11:43:48 AM)
said yesterday he is waiting till Sept. 07 to see how the races play out. Sounds smart to me to wait and see

I still have 1 "Warner '08 for President" bumper stickers left. One with 12 stars.
I knew I held on to it for a reason.
We are keeping an eye... (sndeak - 12/18/2006 11:46:30 AM)
on this, that's for sure. We still believe that Gov. Warner is the best person to lead this country out of this mess.
It's still way to early.....
hey steve :) (chiefsjen - 12/18/2006 2:16:29 PM)
i really think that any announcements past feb/mar 07 is way too late.
warner has more work to do than the others that are gonna have their names in, that's why vilsack announced so early, for name recognition.
i do still agree mark is definitely our best bet -- warner/clark is a dream ticket.
i still have my stickers (3 of them) on my car and just handed out another dmw button at an event on saturday :)
Not really (sndeak - 12/18/2006 4:18:09 PM)
If others start to drop off or someone makes a mistake, I think you will see more people urging Gov. Warner to get back in. We are still 13 months away.
Just because some of the top "consultants" may have already committed to other candidates doesn't mean there isn't talent out there to help the Gov.
Staff (DukieDem - 12/18/2006 7:36:52 PM)
Consultants are overrated. The netroots of the party can carry an inspiring candidate with shoestrings (Jim Webb/Jon Tester) over a well connected mediocore one (Harris Miller/Jon Morrison).
well (chiefsjen - 12/18/2006 8:04:52 PM)
i'll still be helping out whatever gov warner decides. :)
it was nice to meet you, though briefly at his party.
Steve (Rob - 12/18/2006 3:39:52 PM)
What are your plans for '07? Any more draft efforts?
Clark, Warner (drmontoya - 12/18/2006 1:11:23 PM)
Decisions, decisions!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (DanG - 12/18/2006 3:19:29 PM)
Please get in, oh please please please PLEASE run, Governor Warner.
Perhaps VP....... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 12/18/2006 6:11:53 PM)
I could definitely see him making it obvious that he would be interested in being the Democratic candidate for Vice-President. After all, that is one thing that was speculated about when he originally announced he wasn't going to run. It would also allow him to have a
somewhat lighter schedule until the primaries were over and, thus, he could spend more time with his family.
rumors... (novademocrat - 12/18/2006 9:26:21 PM)
Mark Warner isnt running. And he wont be running. Does anyone really think that it was Evan Bayh who scared him out of the race? Puleazzeeee!!!
insight? (chiefsjen - 12/19/2006 11:03:49 AM)
can you give us some insight about why you say he's not gonna change his tune and run?
think about it... (novademocrat - 12/19/2006 12:22:31 PM)
He was better positioned then anyone at the time of his dropping out to run a very successful campaign and become the next POTUS. As you read in news reports, they were lining up the donors (already had the capacity to raise more than everyone but Hillary), and everyone else (read political supporters) needed to wage a successful campaign. Those people are all signing on to other campaigns - will they come to Mark Warner if he gets back in, probably not.
I was Mark Warners biggest supporter - I think he is exactly what this country needs, but he already pulled out, and it will be real hard to get in later (say "Fall 07" like the Hotline Blog keeps talking about) and get any oxygen from the Big 3 or 4 candidates (4 if Gore is in). Its not worth it and it wont happen.
I also (chiefsjen - 12/19/2006 2:56:15 PM)
think that a late 07 decision is too long to wait considering the name recognition of edwards, gore, clinton, obama... but i still think mark is the best candidate of all those.
i worked on draftmarkwarner.com and am still part of that campaign.
there will be a new site up in the future called warnerthe markofleadership or some such name.
i hope if he does change his mind, it will be sooner than later. :)
Hope for MRW (charleyconrad - 12/19/2006 12:59:20 PM)
This is great news. I still have my bumper sticker on my car. It can happen !! He is a proven leader and he has a record to run on and results to show. I am packing for Iowa and New Hampshire - let's go on the Mark Warner road show again !!
I am off next week - I think I am going to New Hampshire (totallynext - 12/19/2006 9:45:11 PM)
Hey - I am off next - week - and I think I will go to New Hampshire to follow John Edwards. While I like Warner - I really like Edwards and he will declare
Hope not (Bernie Quigley - 12/20/2006 7:22:27 AM)
I published one of the first articles in an Alexandria newspaper last year calling on him to run and was on the "draft Warner" committee (although I live in NH), but now that he has dropped out, I hope he doesn't come back in right now. I think Warner will be a great Presdient but Dems need a long-term vision and a 25-year plan like any university or corporation would have. People outside Virginia have begun to know who he is & that will grow. I'm not clear if he can run again in Virginia as Governor but if so he should, and then think of 2012 and 2016 as President. This country is a mess internally with greater problems than we have abroad; but the mess abroad will take some fixin' first. I was first impressed with Warner by his ideas on education and his ability to see the long-distance fate of regional economies. We are at the classic 60-year turning into the fourth post-war generation of politics. It is the moment most fraught with chaos and danger. But once it stabilizes, the winning party always restores equalibrium and takes the day. The only Presidents ever remembered are those that come at the end of the period & at the beginning of the new day: Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt - that could well be Warner. But Clark first.
yes (chiefsjen - 12/20/2006 10:40:01 AM)
he can re-run for gov. but here's the thing, he can't consider a 12/16 run -- because 12 will be the incumbent dem president and 16/24 will most likely be (political gods willing) whomever was dem VP to 08/12.
and if he's not the VP this time around, i dont see him making a serious run at prez.
i'm also ready to support clark and i think a clark/warner ticket is unstoppable. or a warner/clark ticket :)
He has North/South appeal (Bernie Quigley - 12/20/2006 12:19:59 PM)
For one Yankee-reared and Harvard-educated, Warner has shown that he can carry Southern (red) states - it is simply a matter of treating people fairly; treating people as equals. Surely he can carry the North as well. Frankly, that doesn't come naturally to most people. John Sheldon Reed's studies at UNC Chapel Hill suggest that people form "holistically" and naturally by seeing themselves in opposition to someone else. Clark and Warner are both "federal" types; types who can appeal to all without alienating the one from the other. It is perhaps a rare gift of character. I saw Warner speak up here in North Conway, NH, just recently to a small crowd of senior citizens - just before he dropped out. Everyone seemed pretty thrilled, but not in an Obama way.
