Democrats Work?

Over on MyDD I was reading Sarah Carter's post about this organization, whose basic premise is putting Dem Values into action, 365 days a year, not just around election time.
We all know that the repubs are great at photo ops during election season. We need to ensure that the dem party is visible 24/7 doing good because good is what we do when we are elected.

Right now because of work and grad school I cannot work to lead an organization like this, but I can help and I want to volunteer in this manner.

Anyone interested in starting a chapter of Democrats Work in DC metro/Fairfax?

Thoughts? (daninarlington - 12/17/2006 9:41:36 AM)
I'm pretty serious about this - its something I really believe in - when people see Dem Party values in action, they vote for our candidates - the repubs are great at talking abuot keeping your own money/low taxes and they raise the family values boogeyman bull all the time, but when people see that dem policies in action are working to make their community better, they check the dem box on the ballot/press the dem button on the touchvote screen.

If you want to start one up here in the Arlington area, please let me know!

This is what Democrats should be doing (Dianne - 12/17/2006 12:35:04 PM)
Dan in Arlington,  Yeah this is a great idea!  To those who aren't sold (or think just talking politics is more interesting), just think how you might be impressed if you were in need and a Dem organization helped you out.  I've tried it and it works.  People seem to remember that it's the Democrats that helped to do it!!!

I've just visited their website and list their goals below; think about it.....

1.  Make tangible contributions to increase the visibility of Democrats at the local level. We want to show our neighbors that Democrats get things done, making improvements that people can point to and say: "The Democrats did that for this community." We associate Democrats with service so when there is a need in the community, people will say, “Call the Democrats, they always have people who can help.”

2.  Engage the grassroots during non-election time to keep folks active and involved. Instead of asking people to get involved every two or four years, we tap into that energy year-round and “keep the band together.”

3.  Reach out to people who might not otherwise get involved in purely “political” activities, but share our values. Not everyone wants to hand out campaign literature or phone bank or even wants to work for a particular candidate, but they are willing to paint a school or clean up a park with their friends.

4.  Build a unified stable of motivated and easily mobilized volunteers who can help candidates win elections.

Dan, thanks for bringing this to our attention.  Committees take note and take action!!  Wouldn't this also be good if the DPVA promoted something like Virginia Democrats Work????

I couldn't agree more with you, Dianne and Dan.  (And that's not just because I helped found Democrats Work!)  Happy to help in any way that we can.  Give me a buzz if you want to talk . . . 415-552-4878 or tbates@democratswork.org

Happy New Year!
