Holy moly, what a shocker! Via Kos, AP has declared Ciro Rodriguez (D) the winner tonight over incumbent Rep. Henry Bonilla!

U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla lost Bexar County for the first time in his political career Tuesday night, and trailed Democrat Ciro Rodriguez in total votes in the sprawling Congressional District 23.

The Associated Press declared Rodriguez the winner shortly before 9 p.m.

Talk about an exclamation mark on the 2006 election season - another pick-up in George Bush's adopted state.

p.s. Thirty-one seats if you count the Dems picking up Bernie Sanders' indy seat, but he was caucusing with the Dems anyway.

p.p.s. Congrats to NGD, who supported Ciro in this race. Also diaried by pitin here.

It's actually (phriendlyjaime - 12/12/2006 11:36:17 PM)
the 31st pick up...

Just sayin'...

ah, but see my post-script! (Rob - 12/12/2006 11:41:16 PM)

Well, here is my mistake, sorry... (phriendlyjaime - 12/12/2006 11:42:15 PM)
The fat lady hasn't sung yet, but it looks like the last race of the year will be yet another Democratic pickup, meaning we pick up 31 seats this year (including Bernie Sanders' seat).

I apologize for speaking too soon...

Amazing (Dan - 12/12/2006 11:51:51 PM)
The number of voters was really small, but it looks like the GOPers just weren't enthused for this one.  Congrats Ciro!  This is a great pick-up.  I have heard excellent things about Ciro and I believe he will make an excellent representative.  Democrats now DOMINATE THE HOUSE.  DOMINATE the House.  I had to repeat that.  It sounds so amazing.

It's great. (phriendlyjaime - 12/13/2006 12:00:13 AM)
It's such a good sign.  We won in places we never should have won 3, 4 years ago.  It's an amazing accomplishment, and that is why the Republicans are angry and on the defensive.

Hispanic vote (KCinDC - 12/13/2006 12:35:31 PM)
Hotline thinks this could indicate trouble for Republicans among Hispanic voters. Apparently Bonilla's vote for the border fence hurt him a lot.

And along with all Bonilla's other flaws as a legislator and a human being, I'm glad to be rid of the guy who wanted to force us to rename 16th Street after Reagan.

Pitin and NGD, way to pick 'em! n/t (Andrea Chamblee - 12/13/2006 12:18:38 AM)

Rob... (pitin - 12/13/2006 1:19:10 AM)
Thanks for the link and the public recognition, but what is it about our initials NGD that you dislike so much ;o)

One more???? (Newport News Dem - 12/13/2006 10:02:57 AM)
What are the chances of a new election in FL-13 and have Jennings win it?

I only say this as I predicted a 33 seat (6 in the Senate) pick up this year and would like to be off only 1 and not 2!
