John WarnerJohn Warner increased further speculation that he will not retire in 2008 after George Allen made his final speech on the Senate floor by speaking to reporters after Allen's speech and stating that he was worried about Virginia having two freshman Senators.
Warner is relinquishing the chairmanship of the Armed Services Committee after having served at the panel's helm for six years.

He says he remains concerned about the amount of time it takes to raise campaign money.

Virginia Pilot Online also has this story, and a poll!

(UPDATE by Rob: In other John Warner news, Hotline reports that his vote was instrumental in bring disgraced Senator Trent Lott back into a leadership position. H/T Taegan.)

Warner or Kaine (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:16:14 AM)
Need to mount a serious challenge to Warner. I mean I know Warner is a nice guy but so was Chafee and RI voters kicked him out. It's time to elect Democrats in power.

Unless Warner decides to switch parties or retire, he deserves a tough challenge.

J. Warner losing in poll (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:20:58 AM)
Should John Warner Run For Another Term?

Hey, everybody; please go vote in the poll! (cycle12 - 12/7/2006 11:53:05 AM)
Currently (Thursday, December 7, 10:50 A.M.), the numbers look very similar to the final Webb/Allen margin.

Amazing, coincidental, or indicative?

Please remember to vote.

Thanks!

Steve

Hey, how about this slogan? "Mark Not John!" (cycle12 - 12/7/2006 11:38:30 AM)
That would be really original!

Oh, wait...

Thanks!

Steve

Great slogan! (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:46:54 AM)
I love it!

Warner interferes with Tom Davis's career goals (Andrea Chamblee - 12/7/2006 11:47:36 AM)
Northern Virginia gave more votes to Davis's opponent (over 100,000 votes to Andy Hurst), em> than to any other House challenger in all of Virginia. Davis has to be worried.  Henry Waxman will show what a do-nothing Chairman Davis has been (see here and  here). In 2008 his District will be even bluer. If Davis can't run statewide, he may lose. Although the rest of the state may not like him, either; he'll seem too out of touch with them as well if they believe his "moderate" blather.

Andrea (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:49:07 AM)
Who's running in that district in 2008 if not Davis? I know a former Navy commander that is very interested.

Navy Commander (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:49:25 AM)
He would run as a Democrat, of course!

Also.. (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:50:46 AM)
You or someone should write a Diary on your analysis of the district and the future of it and Tom Davis.

Democrats running in the 11th (Andrea Chamblee - 12/7/2006 12:02:15 PM)
I don't know who'd be running. Speculation has included Byrne and Connally. Hurst certainly made an admirable showing (I wish Pelosi would take her cue from his stand and stop apologizing for being a Democrat, what with impeachment and budget off the table before it is even leverage for change). A diary on the future of the 11th would be better coming from someone who doesn't have the Hurst-Davis tunnel vision I am guilty of.

I hope to hand off my information to someone who will have more time to polish the information better and keep banging the drum. Please put any takers in touch with me.

Do I have your email? (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 12:04:41 PM)
Well, I just msgd you on myspace.

Warner and Allen (Terry85 - 12/7/2006 5:25:10 PM)
I love how one of the reason's he gave for running again was because he doesn't think VA is ready for 2 freshmen Senators.  Then Lamar Alexander warned everyone that he doesn't think Allen is done with public "service"...ugh!!!

Sorry guys... (jdawg - 12/7/2006 11:11:50 PM)
No offense, but I don't think John Warner would lose.  Yes, Mark Warner came close in 1996, but I think, although possible, he'd be in a strong position.  On Davis, there is word on the Republican side that he feels he MUST leave his seat by at the latest 2010 (if not 2008) because of the changing demographics in the district.  From Davis' view an unabashed liberal democrat with no money ran against him and garnered 45% of the vote against a "moderate" who has been in office for a while.  Not good - he can see the writing on the wall.

As for which Dem runs for the district, I don't want to make enemies, but I know there are a few I DO NOT want to see.

-My Two cents ;)

Mark Warner 1996 (drmontoya - 12/7/2006 11:20:01 PM)
That campaign was a different Mark Warner, politicians grow. As we seen Webb do during the short duration of the campaign. Between 1996 and 2008 have 12 years in between them.

Since then, Mark Warner has been Governor and one of Virginia's most popular and respected politicians. He's even polling higher in favorability than the other Warner (John) in late 2006.

Sorry, Mark Warner could beat John Warner in a rematch. Furthermore if John Warner doesn't raise the right money he will find it tough even to beat a popular centrist Tim Kaine as well.

Sure they do... (jdawg - 12/7/2006 11:28:44 PM)
I never said Mark couldn't beat John.  I said it would be difficult.  This state is changing and John Warner has never been popular with the Republican base anyway.  Additionally, the Republicans may rip themselves apart over transportation funding before 08 even gears up regardless of who runs.  Once again, Mark could definitely beat John as could other Democrats.  However, make no mistake, if John Warner wants to run again, he'll raise the money he needs and be formidable to beat.  Much more formidable than one-term, caricature of a conservative George Allen.  Promote Democrats, don't promote an 'analysis' that doesn't jive with reality.
