The shutout is official

The Republican party failed to oust any Democratic incumbents in the House, Senate, or Governors' mansions.
The Dems pulled off a complete shutout over the Republicans, who didn't pick up a single governorship or seat in the House or Senate. This is now certifiably the case because Dem Rep. John Barrow has officially won reelection to his Georgia Congressional seat (though GOP challenger Max Burns could potentially seek a recount). All the remaining undecided races are for GOP-held seats. Incidentally, Georgia was one of the very few fronts where the GOP was eyeing potential pickups, because a recent redistricting made Barrow and fellow Georgia Dem Rep. Jim Marshall vulnerable. Dems have now won both races.
When was the last time the party controlling Congress failed to pick up any seats?  And any governorships?  Sounds pretty historic to me.

[UPDATE by Rob: Larry Sabato claims that this type of shutout hasn't happened since World War II and believes it has never happened ever in our nation's history (thanks Dan). First time for everything!]

[UPDATE by Rob: The GOP candidate conceded - there will be no recount. The shut out is complete.]

According to Sabato... (DanG - 11/16/2006 1:05:35 PM)
Never happened before.  This is a first.

link? (Rob - 11/16/2006 1:10:53 PM)

I'll try to find it for you (DanG - 11/16/2006 1:19:35 PM)
He said this before the election happened in his Crystal Ball, I think.

Hasn't happened Post WWII (DanG - 11/16/2006 1:22:25 PM)
"Five days out, let's rephrase the question this way: when's the last time a major political party has failed to capture a single House seat, Senate seat, or governorship of the opposing party in a federal election year?

We bet it's never happened before, and it certainly hasn't happened in the post-World War II era. After all, even when a party suffers miserable net losses, it usually picks up at least several consolation prizes in the form of open seat pickups or an against-the-tide incumbent defeat."

So, Sabato bets it hasn't ever happend before, and says it definitely hasn't happened since before World War II.

From GA-12: Shut Out in the Heart of "Red"-land (rjl - 11/16/2006 1:25:04 PM)
Despite conventional wisdon that Democrats in Georgia have been permanently crushed by the Red Tide, the Barrow and Marshall victories, certified yesterday (awaiting recount decision of little expected impact), demonstrate that there is life for Dems amongst the voters.  Both of these races were targeted heavily by Repubs, and both were the venues of Bush visits the week before the election.

I am in GA-12 and was here for Bush's visit.  There was as much coverage of the protesters (a real oddity here) as Bush.  The talk then was that Max Burns would win big, and there is now a sense of bewilderment amongst Repubs.

Georgia has the political feel of Virginia just before the Mark Warner campaign for Governor.

Georgia needs an RK branch office. Or at least a series of seminars.

Georgia needs a Mark Warner (DanG - 11/16/2006 1:28:31 PM)

Amen to That (rjl - 11/16/2006 1:31:21 PM)
And I might just stay a while and help the search.

Update: Burns (R) Concedes in GA-12 (rjl - 11/16/2006 3:20:38 PM)
The footnote can now be removed from the main story.  Max Burns (R) will not ask for recount in GA-12 and has conceded to Rep. John Barrow (D).

Soooooo Close (Newport News Dem - 11/16/2006 2:01:55 PM)
to a 40 seat pickup in the House.

Of the gop winners, I had hopes in Heather Wilson going down.

Blame it on Ohio as the gop held onto 3 seats. That is reason enough to cheer for

MICHIGAN

in this Saturday's Game of the Century

Go Blue!

Hell yea! (mkfox - 11/16/2006 3:46:48 PM)
Go Blue! How many Ohio St freshmen does it take to screw in a lightbulb? None, that's a sophomore-level class  ;)

Don't forget (Newport News Dem - 11/16/2006 4:35:36 PM)
2 OSU grads go to a bar to celebrate. The bartender queries as the reason. The grads exclaim that they just finished putting together a jig saw puzzle in 1 year and the box was labeled 4-6 years!

Then there is the story of the botched tailgate party in Columbus. When they ran out of ice, nobody had the recipe to replace it…….

Ann Arbor is a whore. (phriendlyjaime - 11/16/2006 5:47:48 PM)
Michigan will lose.  Period.  I just put up a list of insults for Michigan on my blog.

"Drive, drive on down the field..."

GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife went to Michigan State (PM - 11/16/2006 5:50:12 PM)
and she agrees with your assessment of Michigan, though you might have a wee disagreement about other schools in the conference. LOL

YOU go watch THIS video of OSU kicking Michigan's ass in 04.

It's better and a hell of a lot more impressive.

There you have it (Newport News Dem - 11/17/2006 9:30:56 AM)
My Meeechigan clip contains the powerful music from Carmena Burana. Your clip in support of the poisonous nuts is some street dreg music.

That captures it all.

Hell, I'm just glad George Bush is getting his ass to Vietnam - even if he is 26 years late.

Your math is off (libra - 11/16/2006 10:21:18 PM)
He and his official website are *31* yrs too late... Bet the Vietnamese will be overjoyed to see how up to date he is :)

Par for the course. Remember how he didn't know there were Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq before he went and waded in?

it is only a matter of time (EmperorHadrian - 11/18/2006 3:04:28 AM)
we will lose both of those georgia seats during the next tough year. the two only managed to eek out a victory in a very good year for dems. look for both to switch parties at some point to save their jobs.

Well, there's that little issue of (railfanbob - 11/18/2006 7:59:18 PM)
the Senate seat in Connecticut that went from D to I.  But the Republicans picked up nothing, and for that I'm extremely happy.
