Webb getting Veep buzz?

Tha man isn't in office yet and people are dreaming of him being on the '08 ticket!

(UPDATE: Before people get too excited or perturbed - I know that Webb wouldn't want to be Vice Pres. and that he has pledged to serve out his term. I just thought it was interesting that one week after his election, some people are already wondering about his national prospects.  Personally, I want him to represent me in the U.S. Senate.  And there is a different Virginia Democrat that will hopefully get more serious Veep consideration.)

Veep buzz? (cycle12 - 11/15/2006 9:01:59 AM)
Good point, Rob; I have no doubt that Jim Webb could get the votes and do the job, but I suspect that he's got other plans for the immediate future.

One thing's for sure; if he's asked about it, I predict that Webb will give a succinct answer and then get back to work.

Still, it is intriguing . . .

WWJWD?

sigh - let's put this to bed NOW (teacherken - 11/15/2006 9:28:11 AM)
I spoke w/Steve Jarding about this back around primary time, pointing out that if Jim won the general there would be an immediate buzz, and it needed to be addressed, even preempted

First, in one of the debates Jim answered forcefully that he was going to serve a full six year term is elected, while Allen waffled on the subject.

Second, one of his key points in running, one of the three he kept repeating, is the need to restore balance between the branches, to rein in the abuse and expansion of presidential power at the expense of the other branches.  I think he very much wants to be part of that process.

He will have a small child in August of 2008, and will NOT want to be on the campaign trail for several months.

He wants to address issues that concern him, and he cannot be making a difference on those issues if he is out on the campaign trail.

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe he will get Potomac fever (I doub it).  Or maybe in 21 months he will believe that the only way the democrats can take control and do the right thing is for him to be on the ballot.  That's a long time way.  But for now, let's help knock this down.

Teacherken is spot on (JC - 11/15/2006 9:35:23 AM)
Jim will no doubt be campaigning some on behalf of the Democratic nominees, but I doubt if he is eager to go out and campaign for himself anytime soon.

Obama/Warner?

Obama/Kaine?

Warner/Obama (jackiehva - 11/15/2006 6:04:01 PM)
Obama will be a great choice in 2012 but right now he needs more experience under his belt.  I think Mark Warner has the right stuff although he says he won't run.  And I don't think Hillary can win if she runs in '08.

Agree with you (Catzmaw - 11/15/2006 9:40:58 AM)
teacherken.  Even if he were so inclined, which I don't think he is, Jim Webb is not going to be on the ticket as Veep for the reasons teacherken succinctly stated.

Dude (phriendlyjaime - 11/15/2006 10:08:01 AM)
I doubt Jim Webb would run for a second term in the SENATE.

He seems to me like the type to maybe go for a second term if he is extrememly popular, getting the job done, and having things go relatively his way.  Not bc he is lazy, but bc he doesn't seem thrilled with the election/campaign process.

He won't fight a fight like we just had to witness bc Allen's team was comprised of jealous children.

I can't comment on future runs...it's still too early. (Left Wing - 11/15/2006 10:57:13 AM)
But I disagree here.  Jim was, after all, born fighting.  I think as ugly as this election got, he clearly thrives on impossible challenges.  He may or may not run again in the future, but if he doesn't, it won't be because he's not willing to fight the fight.

I know, I know ... (Rob - 11/15/2006 9:56:09 AM)
I just thought it was interesting that he was already being thought of in this way.  I know he's not interested.

Clark/Obama, Clark/Warner, Edwards/Clark, Edwards/Obama '08 (cycle12 - 11/15/2006 9:51:14 AM)
Those are some of my current choices - so many excellent possibilities!

A Born Leader is Always Recognizable (catbird - 11/15/2006 10:33:31 AM)
I have to believe that the excitement that abounds about Jim Webb is the continuation of the same excitement that spread through his supporters during the campaign. Now that his audience is greater, his mega-phone bigger and his detractors are silenced, his admirers will grow.

Our government has been starving for a man like Jim Webb.  The Congress has been surrounded by political types for so long that when a person comes forth with experience, intellect and thought-filled words who has not one iota of politically self-serving rhetoric, he is bound to be revered and talked about for higher office.

Webb's message works because he knows it is not about Left vs. Right but about Right vs. Wrong, Good vs. Bad. All else is distraction.

I can only hope that Webb's presence will inspire courage of  those around him, including the MSM.  It is really sad that it has taken a person who speaks simple truths eloquently to wake us up to the  horrendous fraud that has been passing as political discourse.

The Senate is the perfect position for Jim Webb... (Loudoun County Dem - 11/15/2006 12:15:54 PM)
... Due to his rich resume he understands the legislative process and its repercussions more thoroughly than almost anyone else. He can guide the oversight of the Pentagon with an insight that most other Senators simply do not have.

The Vice Presidency, despite the gross distortions of the position by the current puppet master and his tool, is in effect an understudy with few real responsibilities other than breaking ties in the Senate. If the incoming congressional majorities do what they have been mandated to do, the executive branch and especially the Vice Presidency will be far more reined in in the future than the current administration.

Moving Jim Webb from the Senate to the Vice Presidency would be a waste of talent and potential. He is of far greater value, not just to Virginia but to the Nation and World, as Senator IMHO.

I helped him get elected to the Seanate. (thegools - 11/15/2006 5:28:58 PM)
And it is my firm hope that he excels in his new job and remains and effective SENATOR until he retires.....in his eighties or later.

Please let's keep him as a Senator.

I don't care what any of you say ;-) (relawson - 11/15/2006 11:14:32 PM)
Jim Webb needs to be on the 2008 ticket.  I'll babysit if the newborn is a concern ;-)

Bite your tongue (libra - 11/16/2006 12:23:39 AM)
We need Webb in the Senate. We need him now, and again in '12 and again in'18 maybe again in '24 -- however long he's willing and able to serve.

But as a VP he'd be a waste of talent and passion. I don't think he'd muscle in the way Dead-eye Dick has done and, otherwise, what's the purpose, other than "Prex-in-waiting"? Which -- God willin'and the creek don't rise -- wouldn't give him a crack at the top spot till '16, when he'll be 70. I think US a bit past the stage where we want senior citizens  as presidents (it's "hard work" -- just ask Bush ), so his age would count against him.

Nah. It's flattering, certainly. But, like Hillary, he's best where he is, from the point of view of the *country*. Now, if I could only convince her not to run... :)
