State Funds to Keep Kids in Day Care
Kaine Uses $3.7 Million in Surplus Money for Program Affected by Welfare ChangesBy Bill Turque
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, November 10, 2006; B05Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) came to Fairfax County yesterday with $3.7 million in hand for a child-care program endangered by changes in federal welfare policy.

For the past several years, Virginia has used state and federal money to subsidize day care for about 6,000 children of single, working parents who had made it off the welfare rolls. When Congress tightened work requirements this year for those still on welfare, the state decided to use its money to help them find child care.But the actions still left funding uncertain for day care for about 1,900 children.
Kaine asked the General Assembly in the spring to use some of the state's budget surplus to make up the losses. The GOP-led House of Delegates rejected the request.
Yesterday, House Republicans pointed to the $4 million transfer as evidence that Kaine is not committed to funding transportation projects unless taxes are raised.
"Northern Virginia's commuters are sitting in traffic, and Governor Kaine wants citizens to pay for baby-sitting," said Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William).
Kaine said $4 million wouldn't cover any road or highway project of consequence.
31 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me.
37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?
38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You?
39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?'
40 "And the King will answer them, 'I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.
' 41 Then He will also say to those on the left, 'Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!
42 For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat;
etc. and etc.
Marshall's hypocrisy is what I've come to expect from the nut-cake wing of the GOP.
We need to put Bruce over the top in Prince William County next year (if Bruce runs again which I do not know).
I am in the next district over in Loudoun (the 32nd where David Poisson defeated Dick Black last year).
I'll see if I can find out who may be planning to run against him
I'd vote for a ham sandwich, too, over Marshall.
And LuAnn McNabb is running against Ken Cuccinelli for the Senate. She's very very smart and has lots of energy. She knows Richmond, having been Chuck Caputo's L.A. She'll be a fine candidate.
I don't know what direction this blog will take -- that's in the hands of its creators. But I'd sure like to see RK lend its blog power to the Northern Virginia Democrats running for House of Delegates and state Senate seats next year.
If Rishell will only run against Miller again, that will give us the "Romy and Rishell" team!
Yep, obscure movie reference...carry on as you were...
we've got to address some serious issues. there are 75,000 REGISTERED VOTERS in the 13th and we need a serious effort to meet voters and spread the word.
the next closest district (Poisson's) had 16,000 less on election day last year. an average HOD district has 25-30 thousand.
we also need to raise an additional few hundred thousand dollars and get to be a 'targeted race' by multiple groups. last year i raised $213k, but making all those money calls for a $20 ask greatly reduced my voter contact. i only got to knock on 8,700 doors and the campaign hit 19k doors. we need to at least double those numbers.
you all up for some canvassing???
as stated in TN "NetRoots, call me..."

There it was in the Post article, in black and white. Wingnut or nut-cake is too tame a description for this man. You're right. He has to go. I'm keeping the actual copy of the newspaper section for later use in the campaign and although I live in Sully District, you can be sure I will contribute and do what else I can to further Bruce's candidacy. I was ashamed for Virginia when Amenndment One passed but if we continue to elect people like this one to our state government, representing us, we are allowing the moral equivalent of the intolerant Taliban to speak for us.
"He's extremely bright and can be very funny, but what he can't see is how his beliefs are cruel to other people," said Sen. Janet D. Howell (D-Fairfax). "He doesn't get that connection."
Bruce--I'm in Chuck's district but I'll contribute to you also.
Also, I think all the Dem delegate and Senate candidates in northern Virginia should send out at least one flier with all of their photos together, to emphasize that northern Virginia needs to vote as a bloc in order to get its regional needs met (e.g., transportation).

You'll find as the 2007 campaign goes along that the tobacco and alcohol industries give lots of money to the GOP in this state, and elsewhere. This goes back quite a few years, and is linked to the "no tax" pledge from Grover Norquist. Norquist was heavily supported by those industries when he started Americans for Tax Reform. The tobacco and alcohol folks fear that legislators will look to "sin" taxes in order to raise funds for state budgets; they know that higher prices for these goods cut consumption and hurt their bottom line.
Marshall's evangelical supporters should be made aware of this connection.
