Martinsville Bulletin: "Vote for Webb for Senate"

The Martinsville Bulletin has a very strong endorsement of Jim Webb in today's paper. Here's the opening paragraph:
Sen. George AllenGÇÖs criticism of novels written by his opponent is the last straw in a negative campaign the likes of which Virginians have not seen before. It also has convinced us to endorse Democrat Jim Webb in the Nov. 7 election.
OK, one more paragraph...too good to resist. :)
To make these books a campaign issue is beyond inappropriate. It is sleaze of the sort that backfired on gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore last year, when his campaign ads invoked Adolph HitlerGÇÖs name and he lost the election to Gov. Tim Kaine. Virginians judged that strategy of desperation then; we hope they do the same thing on Tuesday.
Go Jim Webb!

Has any Virginia paper... (Steven J. Berke - 11/1/2006 11:15:27 AM)
other than the Times-Disgrace endorsed Allen? (I suppose the Washington Times, if you want to count them as a 'Virginia paper'.)
Yes (DanG - 11/1/2006 11:26:22 AM)
Maybe 2 or 3 besides the RTD and WashTimes. But honestly, nobody listens to the RTD and WashTimes endorsement. They would endorse the Republican no matter what, even if Jefferson himself rose from the grave and ran as a Democrat.
The rabidly right-wing F'burg Free Lance-Star (Lowell - 11/1/2006 11:27:41 AM)
endorsed Allen. But even that one was not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Lists are here (adshubert - 11/1/2006 11:47:14 AM)

I also sent the Webb campaign a note to add the Chronicle newspaper as well, a monthly that is distributed by mail throughout Fairfax County.

Neither one is dominating the endorsements, but I think it is a remarkable statement the number of local Virginia papers that are turning against Allen, who was supposed to be the most popular politician in the commonwealth at one point. The erosion that is reflected in the most recent polls also is evident with the newspaper editors. Even several of Allen's endorsements are at-best lukewarm. For Webb to be on par with Allen in this category is tremendous.
The Sungazette newspapers (Catzmaw - 11/1/2006 12:21:04 PM)
endorsed him with the note that his Senate record was "mediocre". The thinking seemed to be better the devil you know than the devil you don't.
Is anybody up for... (chiefsjen - 11/1/2006 11:42:54 AM)
protesting allen at his upcoming rally in Springfield on Saturday Morning?
is there any effort to get people out yet?
he's appearing from like 8-10 at the interstate van lines on rolling road.
thoughts?

What a great endorsement! (JC - 11/1/2006 11:52:38 AM)
I think Allen's attempt at book burning is going to cost him this one.
