The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) today released new polling data collected over the weekend showing Jim Webb beating George Allen in the Virginia Senate race. Go to www.fudgereport.net to learn more about the brewing controversy over AllenGÇÖs arrest records:
* Webb beats Allen by a five point margin (43-38). With leaners, Webb beats Allen by a four point margin (47-43).
* BushGÇÖs job approval numbers are terrible GÇô 53% of Virginia voters disapprove of the job Bush is doing (45% strongly disapprove).
* Interestingly, the voters sampled in the poll said they voted for Bush over Kerry in 2004 by an eight point margin (50-42), a result that mirrors the actual margin Bush beat Kerry by in their presidential contest (54-46).
* The poll was conducted by Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group and surveyed 811 likely voters. It was conducted from October 26 through October 29 and its margin of error was +/-3.5%.
Looks like Allen's slanders and lies about Jim Webb are not only failing to move his numbers upward, they're backfiring. Can we say "Jerry Kilgore 2005?" Ha.
[UPDATE: New Rasmussen poll out, but it's still in "Premium." Still, the teaser is intriguing - "The Virginia Senate race has now taken an interesting turn. See how Challenger James Webb (D) now fares against Incumbent George Allen (R)."]

Nice.

Is there a link to the polling data?
This is great news! Webb's lead is outside of the margin of error in this poll.
We still have to get those undecideds. I bet they break more than 50% for Webb.
Susan, Darlin' (Newport News Dem - 10/30/2006 1:43:25 PM)
The undecided will break 2 or 3 to 1 for Webb. If they are still undecided about Allen after 20 years, the are quite Webb votes.
or (Newport News Dem - 10/30/2006 2:21:01 PM)
even "quiet" Webb votes!
Hey Bud (Susan Mariner - 10/30/2006 2:49:15 PM)
You're probably right, but we'd better keep working like we're down.
Fantastic job being done by Newport News Democratic Committee chairs :-)
Not yet, as far as I know... (Lowell - 10/30/2006 2:16:57 PM)
...but let me check the DSCC website.
Right (Lowell - 10/30/2006 2:17:40 PM)
here.
Cool! (Susan Mariner - 10/30/2006 2:45:51 PM)
I love it. Thanks!
Now we're talking ... (Catzmaw - 10/30/2006 1:31:05 PM)
Having just come back from the Women for Webb rally I am wondering how any woman in her right mind could vote for Allen. Campaign efforts should hammer extremely hard on women's issues for the next week.
Hope this comes out true in the end (JohnM - 10/30/2006 1:35:49 PM)
Ive been super happy every day riding home from work here in the West End of Richmond. Right before i get to my turn on Pump Rd theres a nice house with tons of Webb and Nachman signs up. At the end of Ridgefield and Gaskins i belevie someone else had huge Webb signs. If we can make inroads and gotv in heavily GOP areas. I know we can win. I wish i could do more for this campaign. I donated what i could money wise but have been unable to do more.
Fabulous News! (Doug in Mount Vernon - 10/30/2006 1:36:44 PM)
Let's hope the last Rasmussen and a few of the other late independent polls confirm this. I have a feeling they will.
don't breath a sigh of relief (TurnVirginiaBlue - 10/30/2006 1:58:54 PM)
Keep pounding it until the last dog dies.
I'm thrilled VA is coming around to sanity but it takes a lot of communication to cut through the mud Allen is throwing on an hourly basis.
To me, this means that Webb, campaign and volunteers are kicking some serious ass in getting the message out in spite of Allen's mud war.
We need confirmation (bamboo - 10/30/2006 2:18:25 PM)
THis poll sounds like an in-house survey, so we need an independent confirmation. Let's hope the momentum is with Webb in these last days, with Obama's appearance in Richmond. And I hope he's out shaking hands from sunrise to sunset.
Confirmation (snickers - 10/30/2006 3:48:43 PM)
Not sure what you mean by in-house, but I'm pretty sure that this is the poll that called me the other night...got a random phone call in the evening, and it was a live survey. The woman told me the name of the polling group, but it was long and I can't remember what she said - might've been this one...

Maybe it was more reflective than anecdotal!
My wife just gave me an "I told you so" look (PM - 10/30/2006 2:41:55 PM)
She had said the Allen book thing would backfire.
Here is a discussion of Allen's strategy from Howie Kurtz's WaPo online chat today:
Tokyo, Japan: OK, so this week's big question seems obvious: Just what do Webb's novels' sex scenes have to do with anything, and why did they suddenly become a story after Allen's camp put out a press release? The media had access to the novels before, but evidently didn't deem them newsworthy. Why not make a journalistic judgment like, "we think such details taken out of context of a novel have nothing to do with what kind of public servant he'll be," and wait to see if the accusations gain any traction and become a news story legitimately, rather than taking this sort of thing on a silver platter?
Howard Kurtz: I wonder if the Webb novels will change any voters' minds; if he had written a murder mystery, would that make him pro-killing? But the answer to why the press thinks this is worthy of attention was, sadly, embedded in the Post story the other day. It said George Allen's campaign had been pushing this story line for weeks, to no avail, before giving it to Matt Drudge, who trumpeted it with a big headline. Suddenly it was on the network news and the front page of The Post. If it wasn't a story before, how did it become a story because of one Web site?
***
Washington, D.C.: Re: Webb - isn't it part of the reporter's job to read the entirety of the books rather than rely on the excerpts released by the opposition campaign?
Howard Kurtz: I don't know that the reporters didn't read (or at least speed-read) Webb's books. And if you're going to do a story on the most salacious passages, the ones that were highlighted were probably the ones you'd pick. But why is it a story at all? Apparently John McCain wasn't offended; he blurbed one of the books.

Re- Webb -Allen: What might be a good question is to ask Senator Allen if it's fair to criticize someone who wrote a novel based in part on his experiences in Vietnam, when the Senator, who could have served, didn't.
Howard Kurtz: I think some of Webb's allies have made that point.
Phonebankers, take note (Catzmaw - 10/30/2006 5:26:34 PM)
I think each of us should make a point of bringing up Allen's scurrilous treatment of Webb's writings with every undecided or leaning toward Allen person we encounter. It's just so low it shocks the conscience of most normal people.
War Novels (TurnVirginiaBlue - 10/30/2006 5:39:15 PM)
I think bringing up Webb's military experience and Navy Cross/war hero, books talking about the horrors and reality of war is the key.
They get it really fast when it's realized what a tough military guy Webb really is.
I personally want someone like that influencing military policy and providing some oversight..
not some corporate public relations crafted phony "cowboy"!
Poll sounds good--we've just gotta hope (summercat - 10/30/2006 5:39:25 PM)
that all those Webb people actually bother to vote.
Got a nice pro-Webb mailer from the NEA today. I had just been hoping the cmapaign would get out some direct mail stuff, too, lol.
Rasmussen Premium (Ken C. - 10/30/2006 5:41:09 PM)
I have a "premium memebership" and the news is very good! To qoute: "Challenger James Webb (D) has taken a modest lead over Senator George Allen in a Sunday night survey. The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll shows Webb with 48% of the vote to 46% for Allen. When leaners are included, it's Webb 51% Allen 46%." Seems to line up very nicely with the DSCC numbers. Now, let's GOTV and "seal the deal"!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! (Jambon - 10/30/2006 5:51:32 PM)
this is kick ass!
Randi Rhodes on Webb! (thaddaeus toad - 10/30/2006 6:04:49 PM)
Randi spent the 3:45-4:30 segment discussing Allen's disgusting attacks on Webb. She praised Webb, and pointed out that she served in the airforce and would have been honored to serve under Jim!! She also pointed out that Fields of Fire is the most respected book on the Vietnam war, taught by the Marine Corps to all students. There was a great caller from the Richmond area, who spoke for about 10min.s, praising Webb, and pointing out that Jimmy is serving in Ramadi. Who was that, I am sure I know her, her voice sounded familiar, and she said she's been working at the campaign office. Anyway, whoever she was, thank you for getting the word out to Randi!
I think this is going our way, thanks to all our hard work, and Jim's remarkable candidacy.
I love the smell of Democracy in the morning.
Get the recording... (thaddaeus toad - 10/30/2006 6:05:46 PM)

RassMussen Poll (NeoDem - 10/31/2006 9:32:10 AM)
The Latest from RasMussen is Webb 51-46. Coming from RasMussen it is worth 51-40 for webb. The teaser is at pollster.com
