What is "rt?"

Waldo Jaquith discusses the latest Kilgore campaign weirdness, in which e-mail traffic between Jerry Kilgore and campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh was inadvertently sent to the press:

This is what Waldo has to say:

What?s interesting is that this was called to the attention of reporters by way of an e-mail sent out by campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh, in which he accidentally included, at the bottom of the e-mail, the internal exchange that prompted the e-mail to reporters. The noteworthy bit was the e-mail from Jerry Kilgore (from his Blackberry, natch), in which he wrote:  "How about sending this to press?? Get others to ask, what was Kaine?s role?? This could get us on offense on rt issue."

Bob Lewis covers this for the AP, writing: "Kilgore spokesman Tim Murtaugh, who forwarded the private note by mistake, said the 'rt issue' referred to the 'the poor management of Richmond during Kaine?s term as mayor.' He said 'rt' is Kilgore?s shorthand for 'right.'?

Maybe ?rt? is shorthand for ?right,? but in this context, ?rt? standing for something else (a proper noun) would make a great deal more grammatical sense. What could ?rt? stand for? I wish I had some creative suggestions, though I?m hopeful that others may have some suggestions.

Suggestions?  A Google search indicates a few possible meanings of "rt:"

*A magazine for respiratory care technicians?
*A Radio Programming Software company?
*A maker of casino chips?
*An abbreviation for "reader's theater"?
*Etc. , etc.

OK, those aren't too great, so how about some good old-fashioned brainstorming?

*"Richmond Times-Dispatch?"
*"Racial tensions?"
*"Referendum Taxum"
*"Right-wing ticket"
*"Republican Taliban"
*"Reprehensible tactics"
*"Reproductive totalitarians"

Any other ideas?  I say, let's keep guessing until we figure this one out...or the Kilgore campaign comes clean with what "rt" really means! :)

As one of many volun (Mimi Schaeffer - 4/4/2006 11:27:25 PM)
As one of many volunteers who went to Cincinnati, I can tell you the lessons from Ohio are to flood the air waves, streets and phone lines.

Every independent and Democrat should be personally contacted at least more than once.

Court the bloggers.  They can send an army of volunteers and raise more $$$$ than you can dream about.

In the end Hackett received over $500,000 from small donors.

Virginia's election is in an off-year.  Start raising $$$ like there's no tomorrow from small donors.  Build up the phone and address list with supporters.

This website should have a mechanism to donate and tally the numbers.  People love to see donation numbers grow like a weed.  It gives meaning and purpose to the challenge.

Hackett presented himself as a Libertarian Democratic candidate that garnered national media attention and support.

Finally, we must warn Virginians that one-party rule is not a good thing and remind them of the fiscal fiasco under one-party rule before Warner became governor.

The frame that worked best for Hackett was when he called Schmidt a "rubber stamp."

Gosh, I don't suppose we could call the gentle man from Ohio to help Kaine's campaign...?  I did hear him say on Tuesday he had an appointment in Bolling Air Force this coming week.

Anyhow...here's a breakdown of Hackett's near-victory, with all counties except Hamilton in mostly rural areas:

Adams County
Bush: 64 percent
Kerry: 36 percent
Hackett: 52 percent

Clermont County
Bush: 71 percent
Kerry: 29 percent
Hackett: 42 percent

Brown County
Bush: 64 percent
Kerry: 36 percent
Hackett: 56 percent

Pike County
Bush: 48 percent
Kerry: 48 percent
Hackett: 63 percent

Gosh, I don't suppose we could call the gentle man from Ohio to help Kaine's campaign...?  I did hear him say on Tuesday he had an appointment in Bolling Air Force this coming week.
