The Bible speaks about real life.
Good novels do too.
The Bible has lots of gamey stories in it. That's just a fact. Sorry, I don't understand your criticism. Devoted Bible readers know this -- it's not shocking to them at all because they understand the Bible was dealing with good and evil.
Many books contain prose that is uncomfortable to read but nonetheless reflects real life situations -- the Bible, Shakespeare and Huckleberry Finn just to name a few.
Literate, rational people understand the writer is not endorsing those views.
War novels contain shocking information. They do not dwell much on characters like the Teletubbies.
George Allen and his minions do not want people like Jim Webb -- who understands the horrors of war -- to serve on the Senate floor.
Why?
Think of that.
Are they afraid that Webb would speak the truth about the consequences of battle?
I think George Allen and his team are employing these attacks simply because they enjoy being in power and are willing to do anything to stay in power. George Allen's concern isn't really with what is true, or what is right morally, but rather with what will get him re-elected.
George Allen is using these attacks to rally his base and advance a line of argument that he's been employing with some degree of success against Jim for the past month.
However, it's important to keep in mind that George Allen would not be degrading himself like this if he was comfortable with his position in the race. He would not be degrading himself like this if he was comfortable with his record while he was in office.
