(Arlington, VA) GÇôSenator George Allen routinely tells Virginians one reason they should vote for him is that they GÇ£knowGÇ¥ him. And now Allen says heGÇÖs finally ready to run on his record and ideas.Really?
Do Virginians know that George Allen has opposed legislation that would help victims of sexual assault and domestic violence?
LetGÇÖs tell them.
There is only one candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Virginia who has voted against empowering women who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, and that is George Allen. George Allen has a history of opposing legislation to grant sexual assault victims the rights they need in the workplace.
2004: Allen Voted Against Expanding The Family And Medical Leave Act To Cover Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. In 2004, Allen voted against a proposal that would expand the Family and Medical Leave Act to allow victims of domestic violence and sexual assault to take leave from work for up to 30 days. It also would allow victims of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault to receive unemployment insurance if they have lost their job as a result. The American Association of University Women was for the amendment. [HR 1997, Vote 62, 3/25/04, Failed 46-53, D: 44-3, R: 1-50, I: 1-0]
1988: Allen Opposes Rights of Women Sexually Assaulted in the Workplace. Allen voted against legislation to allow a woman who was sexually assaulted in the workplace to sue her attacker rather than be limited to benefits under workersGÇÖ compensation. He was one of just twenty members of the House who apparently believe that sexual assault in the workplace is just another job hazard. [HB 137, 1988, passed 79-20]
GÇ£George Allen is wrong for Virginia women. And he has shown time and time again that he is out of touch with the needs and issues facing families, children and women in the workplace,GÇ¥ said Webb spokesperson Kristian Denny Todd. GÇ£Voting against protections for Women shows his lack of respect for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.GÇ¥
GÇ£Jim Webb has a proven record of improving the workplace environment for women. As Secretary of the Navy, Jim Webb ordered a crackdown on sexual harassment and increased training programs to counter sexual harassment. And, on his own initiative he created a task force, which opened up more operational billets to women than any other Secretary of the Navy in history. As Senator, Jim Webb will be a strong voice for Virginia women,GÇ¥ said Denny Todd.
