Though Drake did not attend the fundraising luncheon President Bush held for her in Virginia Beach this spring, she has repeatedly defended the presidentGÇÖs foreign policy. She speaks readily about the war despite its spiraling violence. At a debate with Kellam last week she said "I think the administration is doing a good job with the problems they face" in the foreign policy arena. She rejects establishing a timetable for withdrawal of Iraq.
"Within this district, a lot of people have family who are [in Iraq], friends who are there," Drake said, explaining she gets little flack from constituents for her position on the war. She gets support from constituents and other voters; they justify her current position on the conflict. "People will call me up and say, from across the nation, after weGÇÖve done something on the house floor on Iraq, youGÇÖre the only one whoGÇÖs saying what my son said or what my daughter said or what my husband said about the progress that is being made in Iraq."
Most of Iraq is calm, Drake said. An Iraqi who lives in the district told her that Iraq, besides four major hot-spots, "is like a vacation."
