Photos from Webb Rally with Supporters in Hampton Roads

Here are excerpts from a report e-mailed to me.

Governor Warner was a no show due to windy weather, and Jim was late due to traffic.... BUT, the crowd seemed cool with that...Shawn and Phil spoke, and they were GREAT!  And then Jim was phenomenal.  The whole thing was REALLY fast as they had to open the streets before the shipyard workers left.  So I took the pictures and woo hooed when I should have, and then I had to bolt.  I was REALLY impressed with the turn out and enthusiasm.  I thought there was a closeness in the Democratic Party, but it is NOTHING compared to the love of union brothers and sisters!  WOW!  I would love to feel that!

I suppose that is all.  Other than the little girl who Jim hugged, WAS SO CUTE!  She stood right in front of the podium when Jim spoke, holding the sign over her head, and after she hugged him, she asked that he sign her sign!  I just saw a softer side of the next Senator I had not seen before.

Nice photos (Todd Smyth - 10/20/2006 4:49:04 PM)
What kind of camera is that?

Don't know, since it wasn't mine. (Lowell - 10/20/2006 4:50:35 PM)
But I agree, they're very nice pics.

Looks good--he looks fresh too (PM - 10/20/2006 5:30:01 PM)
What does not look good is some of the press Bush gave Sherwood and Allen yesterday, and vice versa.

Look at this headline in the Kansas City Star (I know it's about Sherwood, but it's still indicative):

Bush backs philanderer
With the GOP on defense, even an incumbent touched by scandal gets help.
By RON HUTCHESON
McClatchy Newspapers

LA PLUME, Pa. | He said she was “a casual acquaintance.” She said they were extramarital lovers, and told police that he tried to choke her.

His wife says she forgives him. So does President Bush.

In fact, Bush traveled to northeastern Pennsylvania on Thursday to help the wayward husband, Rep. Don Sherwood, a Republican, keep his seat in Congress.

This is losing votes for GOP candidates all over.  Religious voters are not going to like this at all.

By the way, the district Sherwood represents is beautiful.  I'm from that area.  Here's the bridge in Sherwood's town, Tunkhannock PA:TunkVi2

Jim Was So Energetic!!! (Jen Little - 10/20/2006 7:11:39 PM)
Jim was so full of energy!

It was contagious!

Look out Allen!

We are ready for the race to the finish!

Great pictures Jen! (Left Wing - 10/20/2006 7:51:56 PM)
Good report too.

Great report Lowell, what did the turnout look like?

I don't know, since it isn't my report... (Lowell - 10/20/2006 7:45:53 PM)
...but it sounds like a very successful rally!

Oops (DukieDem - 10/20/2006 8:40:09 PM)
I just saw the header, my mistake.

It was successful! (Jen Little - 10/21/2006 10:12:56 AM)
I really wish the photo of Jim & the little Girl was up here!

It was such a moment to see the child walk up and want to hug Jim!

Still warms my heart!

Webb event (Gene E. Magruder - 10/20/2006 8:42:10 PM)
I would give the number of people about 80, unfortunately
the shipyard workers were in the plant working and the rally was during working hours. There were plenty of unions represented however including the Autoworkers from the Ford plant, the boilermakers, CWA, Plumbers and Steamfitters, IBEW, AFT, the Steelworkers of course, and the crowd was very enthusiastic. It was also fortunate we had a big crowd from the African American community, including Rep. Jeion Ward from Hampton. We could have used Gov. Mark Warner however, they wouldn't let him take off in a plane. Jen was right that the union brothers and sisters stick together and we will work hard for the next 21/2 weeks to put Webb over the top.
Thanks for the pictures Jen.

I second Gene and Jen's reports on the Steelworkers' rally. (summercat - 10/20/2006 10:34:31 PM)
Jim did a great presentation under severe time constraints.  Concise and strong.
I just got home from the NAACP state conference forum.  Jim killed!! He had all of us in the palm of his hand from his opening salvo about getting an NAACP life membership to his closing pledge to support the powerless in the corridors of power. There will be many more detailed reports I am sure--but suffice it to say that a star has been born!
Allen is going to regret big time his refusal to go on stage with Jim--he did the first presentation, got some supportive applause--but Jim blew the audience away!!  He's getting scary-good on the stump!
Watch for Jim Hodges' piece in the Hampton Roads Daily Press.

My little tete-a-tete with a Republican staffer... (Jen Little - 10/21/2006 10:16:57 AM)
What is not formerly mentioned here is my little tete-a-tete with a Republican Staffer at the event...  Which I only know because he said he was with the Repulican Party when I tried to get him to take a Webb Sticker.

When we first crossed paths he stated he was with the Republican Party, and I asked why he was there, and he said he was there to check things out.  I thanked him for being there, said Jim may change his mind, and stated that he should not worry, we would not call him any names.

He commented later that Jim was running late, and I said we had the Republicans in the General Assembly to thank for that as they do not believe we have transportation problems in Hampton Roads...

To which he retorted "Governor Warner passed the highest tax increase in VA History"…

To which I replied, and reminded him, it was a Bi-partisan Budget to save the Commonwealth, and that it was all necessary due to 8 years of 2 crappy Republican governors preceding Governor Warner, which ironically included the soon to be outgoing Senator from VA… I then walked away to sticker more supporters.

NOTE:  he was a PAID Republican staffer (I asked) and NOT a volunteer.  I respect those who are willing to give of their time to do what they believe in - no matter how misguided they may be.

I commend your calm. (Left Wing - 10/21/2006 1:40:52 PM)
I can't talk to republicans these days without it turning into a shouting match!

The Key is Facts! (Jen Little - 10/21/2006 2:33:57 PM)
Don't let them get to you.

Just remember you are on the side of good!

I enjoy reminding Republicans all this mess is their fault.  They screwed everything up!

No need to shout when the FACTS are on our side.  The thing about Republicans is they think we don't know the facts.

We ask!  We demand!  Even from our own party!  We are not a mindless bunch!

Just stick to the facts and remain calm.  You will find the pleasure of having them stutter.  They really cannot go beyond talking points... It is funny!
