Get ready...

because the GOP might be making Virginia its last stand. From the DSCC via kos:
Suffice to say, the MO-TN-OH firewall is burning and is forcing the national GOP to shake up its strategy. It is now reportedly looking to replace Ohio with Virginia where the latest polling shows Jim Webb in a virtual tie with George Allen. With Bush headed to Richmond this week to raise money for Allen, who once thought he was so safe that he had started seeking the 2008 Republican nomination, it's clear that Virginia is on the brain of the RNC-NRSC-White House troika.

no doubt (TurnVirginiaBlue - 10/16/2006 2:37:21 PM)
This is the battle of election 2006 in my view. So, time to pull out all of the stops and get Webb over the hump!
If we consider this a local race in each district (Used2Bneutral - 10/16/2006 3:07:39 PM)
then we can focus on getting the best possible turnout and vote totals in each of our own areas.... if Tidewater and NoVa go big enough and far enough for Webb.... the rest of the state won't matter as much.... but we can't count on anything except a big fight right to the end...
Let me suggest we take this thread to remember all the dirty tricks we have seen pulled on our candidates for the last few elections and then to suggest some solutions and strategies to deal with each.... it is my experience that all of these dirty tricks usually fail when the voters and those of us who recognize them in time have counter measures in-place and ready to apply. If we talk about them now, we can be ready as we see them start to pop up those last 24 hours....
For example, the old dirty trick of supplying a bad address or operating times for a polling place that has been supposedly moved at the last minute.... this is usually distributed by a flyer put under the windshield wipers in historically minority precincts usually Hispanic or Black. If they mailed it we could get them on mail-fraud..... But to counter it we make sure during GoTV that we always tell the voters in big letters where and when they need to vote, just in case, as part of our door hangers..... this technique has been very effective in Ohio and Florida the last few elections.
Who else has some and solutions???? didn't they slash the tires on some church busses and van's to keep the elderly and less mobile voters from being able to get to the polls during the Kerry campaign????
Some suggestions (Rebecca - 10/16/2006 4:48:31 PM)
How about a vote suppression hotline and people ready with cameras? People should be warned about what could happen and given the vote suppression phone number. If tires are slashed then photos should be taken and a contingency plan should be put into place. If funny business does happen documentation will be the best defense against it in the future. If proof of wrongdoing can be assigned, that would be even better.Proof is always better than complaining and having people say you made it up.
How can we get the word (Gordie - 10/16/2006 4:54:37 PM)
to those fools who mess with voters when they try to vote. Don't they understand there is a large fine and prison time for whom ever gets caught.
Prosecutors need to start prosecuting these fools and the practice would stop. Obama is trying to get a law passed that the fine is $100,000. If that does not get some ones attention, I do not know what will.
Some how the news media has to start printing these stories ahead of time and the consquences for breaking election laws. If peopple knew what was in store for them a large majority would stop.
After all who wants to be a felon over stopping some one from voting?
Interesting... (Bwana - 10/16/2006 5:14:14 PM)
...and after the last second visit to Virginia worked so well for Kilgore last year.
Yeah well, Kilgore couldn't mess with Bush (Bubby - 10/16/2006 7:01:43 PM)
Jim Webb is another story. Webb doesn't have that convenient handle between his shoulder blades that George Allen had installed. And Jim Webb has the bona fides to challenge the Whitehouse.
