I received the following report from Mt. Vernon:
This sign is about 1/2 mile from George Allen's house. We've put up 7 4X4's in Mount Vernon. Two were stolen. One was vandalized. Multiple yard signs have vanished. Most in close orbit (1.5 mi.) of Allen's house. Strange stuff.
Anyway, to fight back against the "Allen thugs," as they call them, two Webb supporters put this notice above the Webb 4x4, with Christmas lights around it. Now, as people drive on Mt. Vernon Hwy between Hwy 1 and Mt. Vernon, they can't help but see this. Priceless, and a great way to fight back!
P.S. The son of 87-year-old Wendel Allen, whose property backs on Route 235 (Mount Vernon Memorial Highway), reportedly drove all the way from Pennsylvania this weekend to put up another big Webb sign--professionally made and paid for out of his own pocket. Not only that, but Vaughn broke his back last year in a fall from a ladder, yet still mounted this heavy sign in his dad's backyard by himself Sunday afternoon, along Rt. 235 just a mile or so from George Allen's front door. All just to make sure his 87-year-old dad could express his First Amendment rights safely in his Mount Vernon community. By the way, Mr. Allen is a retired chief in the Secret Service, who moved to Washington in 1945 during the Truman administration. Ironically, Mr. Allen also was a Republican delegate for George Allen when he ran for governor.
Lowell Feld is Netroots Coordinator for the Jim Webb for US Senate Campaign. The ideas expressed here belong to Lowell Feld alone, and do not represent those of Jim Webb, his advisors, staff, or supporters.
I am going to put Christmas Lights around my Webb / Hurst yard signs tonight. I think that it will make the sign get some exposure at night.
This is why George Allen is keeping a wall between him and the press.
I went grocery shopping yesterday evening, and who should be shaking hands outside but my very own Congressworm. When he stuck his hand out, I really tried to be polite but I couldn't help hesitating. I finally said, "You know, I really can't shake the hand of anyone who voted for that obscene Military Commissions bill."
He was surprised into responding, "Uh?"
Me: "That was the most shameful, un-American bill Congress has passed in my lifetime."
He: "Well, we disagree."
Me: "Then you need to learn more about history and constitutional law."
He: "Well, I'm not a lawyer."
With that brilliant riposte, he turned his back on me. I wasn't about to let a little thing that that stop my parting shot: "Voting Republican used be merely stupid. This Congress has made it immoral."
Several people nearby laughed, and I saw his shoulders flinch.
He greeted five or six more people while I was loading my car. Only one promised to vote for him, the rest were noncommittal or told him to his face they were voting for his Democratic opponent, Andrew Hurst. This must have rattled Davis, who is having a much tougher re-election campaign than he ever expected.
In the next several days, the Mt Vernon good ol' boys are going to be seeing A LOT more signs popping up!
