Movements like this exist because of the moral breakdown in our country, but the cause is not exactly what these Evangelicals are preaching. The moral breakdown has been caused by the dehumanization caused by materialism and consumerism. Business interests have made a career out of treating the population like animals to be manipulated by their basic desires in order to do things which are not in their best interests.
If Sigmund Freud has a legacy for the United States then it is the legacy given us by his Nephew, Edward Bernaise. Mr. Bernaise invented the advertising industry. The Republican Party has used these techniques on those in rural American who donGÇÖt have the benefit of a variety of points of view.
The Evangelicals have picked up on these brainwashing techniques and are using them on their kids. One of the worst examples shown in the film is how home schoolers are instilling as distain for science in their kids. They canGÇÖt separate science from the unknown where mysteries lie. Instead they inadvertently make the Bible into their scientific treatise. This illustrates their complete misunderstanding of the Bible and its origin.
In fact the film illustrates that this brand of Evangelism turns Christianity into a hysterical reaction against the GÇ£bad old worldGÇ¥. If they could only investigate who is really running the GÇ£bad old worldGÇ¥ they would be able to make rational decisions. Oh, but I forgot, that would require gathering facts and thatGÇÖs too scientific.
There is a great film called GÇ£The Century of the SelfGÇ¥ which documents how Bernaise used the ideas of Freud to show business and government leaders how to manipulate the masses. In fact, his ideas were used by HitlerGÇÖs propaganda machine. "The Century of the Self" is an Adam Curtis film. Adam Curtis is also the producer of the great documentary "The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear".
