Charlie Cook: Worst Situation for GOP Since Watergate

According to Charlie Cook's latest National Overview, published yesterday, "this is without question the worst political situation for the GOP since the Watergate disaster in 1974."

According to Cook, one of the most respected political analysts in America:

I think a 30-seat gain today for Democrats is more likely to occur than a 15-seat gain, the minimum that would tip the majority. The chances of that number going higher are also strong, unless something occurs that fundamentally changes the dynamic of this election.  This is what Republican strategists' nightmares look like.

Cook also notes that James Carville is suggesting that "Democrats go to the bank and borrow $5 million" in order to "help fund previously ignored Democratic challengers in second- and third-tier districts--the next 30 to 50 Republican-held seats--to fully capitalize on this environment..."

I couldn't agree more.  An extra $500,000 could make the difference between winning and losing for candidates like Judy Feder.  Seems to me like it would be well worth taking out a loan now, then paying it back with the contributions of ecstatic Democrats, after the election.  Are you listening, DCCC?

P.S.  None of this is meant in any way, shape or form for anyone to get complacent.  Quite the contrary.  This is a chance of a lifetime to take power back from the Bush/Cheney/DeLay/Allen crowd. It's now or never; let's work our butts off the next 24 days and make sure we have "no regrets" on November 8!

The NRCC isn't sitting on its hands - or money (Different Drum - 10/14/2006 11:43:53 AM)
The Republicans are simply going to spend everything they have trying to make it all go away.  And they have plenty, as we know.  Last week they dumped a bundle into house races, including VA-02.  Today, they've dumped another $9.3-million into various races.

The Republicans are simply going to saturate the airwaves and cable with negative ads from now until Nov. 7.  How will Democrats respond?  Carville may be right (and I hate typing that) but it's also going to take people on the ground, and GOTV.

I think Carville is right. (Lowell - 10/14/2006 12:28:10 PM)
Love your sig line, btw! :)

What if... (Teddy - 10/14/2006 12:34:12 PM)
the Democrats got a bare majority in the House? Do you think they would be able to do very much, frustrated at every turn by an obdurate and angry Republican near-majority? Yet, once things go partisanly wrong, who will get the blame from the electorate next election? The Dems, of course, who were able to do very little to control things, yet are regarded as now having responsibility (but no real power to go with the responsibility). WE MUST GET AN OVERWHELMING MAJORITY in the House, a veto override majority. And the Senate, well there's Joe Lieberman, so we need every last one of the Senate seats available or it will be the same situation: all responsibility and no power, if we don't get a bullet proof majority. At the mercy of viciously vincidctive repubs, with Cheney presiding.

a veto override majority? (littlepunk - 10/14/2006 12:59:38 PM)
yeah, this isn't 1932 again. nice try.  what a laughable statement.  will the dems get a majority?  probably.  will it be a slim majority?  probably.  will much get accomplished?  probably not, outside of investigation after investigation.

Just stopping the out of control Bush administration is okay. (loboforestal - 10/14/2006 1:05:08 PM)
If we can just stop these neoconservatives from spending this country into bankruptcy and stop their misguided imperial foreign policy, that'd at least be a start.

This article is a MUST read (left in a right world - 10/14/2006 5:28:17 PM)

We all should be saying (libra - 10/14/2006 7:18:56 PM)
"Thank you, Mr Dean". Howard Dean may be "screaming mad" but, had it not been for his "crazy" vision of "seeding" as many races as possible... had we followed Emmanuel's "siege mentality" plan of defending only the secure representatives... We'd not have all those people in place when GOP began to unravel. Now, instead of pouring all of its money into just a few races, GOP has to scatter it very broadly, to the extent that they're giving up on some -- formerly "secure" -- races.

Thank you, Mr Dean!
