Cinderella Man

Cinderella Man

I can't help but think of the similarities of Jim Braddock and Jim Webb.

Today, for the second time I watched the acclaimed movie "Cinderella Man".

For those who haven't watched this movie, I suggest you do.

It's an inspiring story about one man who fights all odds and becomes the inspiration of a nation in peril during the great depression.

That man was Jim Braddock.

Irish, Boxer, Patriot.

Sort of like another Jim we know today.
Jim Webb.

Who is also of Irish-Scots descent.
Who was a boxer in early years.
Who is a patriot, and inspiration.

Tonight, Jim Webb will put his gloves on in Richmond to face off against George Allen.

Watching this movie I couldn't help think about what people did to move forward during such bleak times during the depression.

Although, circumstances were not as grave.

We do face troubling times today. The power of greed, and corruption is endangering all we hold dear, all we hope, all we dream.

We want to be inspired again.

Jim Webb has done that.

He's has entered this race, not for selfish reasons, not for fame or fortune.

But for what's most important and precious in his world, his family and his country.

The same was true at heart for Jim Braddock.

For God, For Country.

For victory.

No one expected Jim Braddock to win, no one expects Jim Webb to win. Our Cinderella Man.

But we are all with you Jim.

Keep fighting.

My conservative friends love that movie (va.walter - 10/9/2006 5:25:54 PM)
They think it's a tribute to their ideology.  Especially the scene where Braddock returns the welfare money he received.

but... (drmontoya - 10/9/2006 5:51:47 PM)
that's exactly the type of man Jim Webb is. He would do the exact same thing (return money borrowed). he mentions this pride of the irish-scots in his book, Born Fighting.

Left and right labels no longer apply. As an ex-republican myself I can tell you. They didn't leave me, I left them.

They don't stand up for the ideals for republicanism.

Ironically, Jim Webb does.

This is not the Republican Party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhower.

I had the exact same thought (Josh - 10/10/2006 12:33:55 AM)
when I saw the movie.

If You Loved the Movie (Catzmaw - 10/10/2006 1:23:52 PM)
You'll love Born Fighting.  Have been reading it steadily this week.  I have a degree in history but never seriously studied the origins of the Irish Troubles or of the Scots-Irish.  Great book and a very easy read, loaded with well researched information.

Toward the end of the book Mr. Webb talks a bit about his own upbringing, which he describes as sometimes harsh, but never cruel.  His father raised him to be tough and honest.

Speaking of tough, did anybody catch Barack Obama's speech where he urges people to vote for the party that will be "tough and smart" as opposed to the current policy of "tough and dumb"?  Loved it.
