George Allen in Portsmouth for Press Conference at 1 pm

Senator George Allen will be in Portsmouth today holding a press conference with Portsmouth's Independent Mayor James Holley at 1:00 pm.

Portsmouth's controversial mayor had to leave office years ago for sending racist hate mail to black leaders in Portsmouth.  Amazingly enough James Holley is African American.  He has since returned to office in his old position.

This is a surprising development because Mayor Holley actually joined Mayors for Peace and it appears this is probably a press conference where Holley will endorse Allen for Senate?

Since when was Allen for Peace?

It looks like James Holley is back to playing dirty politics again.

Former mayor James W. Holley III will not be prosecuted on the hate-mail allegations that led to his being recalled from office, the U.S. attorney's office said today.

Holley had been under a federal investigation of allegations that he sent obscene and threatening mail to black leaders in the city.

"The investigation is concluded and the U.S. attorney's office will not be seeking prosecution of former mayor Holley," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Watt, who declined to comment further.

Holley has proclaimed his innocence since July, when he was named the only suspect in the hate-mail scandal by Portsmouth Commonwealth's Attorney Johnny Morrison.

The U.S. attorney's office, at the request of the Portsmouth City Council, launched its investigation of Holley last summer.

In November, several of Holley's associates were called before a federal grand jury to testify. His former secretary, Karen E. Pestka, had told state investigators that she had addressed envelopes in which the hate letters allegedly were mailed.

While the investigation by the attorney general's office and the U.S. postal inspector's office continued, efforts to remove Holley from office gained momentum.

In July, Morrison named Holley as the only suspect in the hate-mail scandal, saying Holley's fingerprints were found on some of the obscene letters.

The letters were sent to black leaders and a white newspaper editor, many of whom had criticized Holley for not mediating a dispute between much of the black community and the School Board over the proposed closing of I.C. Norcom High School.

Holley has steadfastly maintained his innocence. The recall effort culminated in December, when Portsmouth voters removed the city's first black mayor from office by a vote of 13,438 to 9,861.

And from the April 25, 1998 Virginian-Pilot:

Mayor James W. Holley III, Deputy Senior Clerk Monte Martin and about 25 city and civic leaders are going to New Zealand next month. The civic leaders are paying their own way. But some civic leaders are upset that, at a time when money for neighborhoods and schools is tight, the city will be paying $ 3,066 to cover Holley's and Martin's flights on Air New Zealand.

I just got confirmation that Holley is one. (va.walter - 10/6/2006 12:51:44 PM)
This is a pretty big deal locally because Holley is well thought of and was a big Kerry supporter in 2004.  Not a big name statewide but folks in Ptown know him.  I'd be very careful attacking him.

I've also been told (although I don't have the name) that the other endorsement will be a surprise and will also be from a 2004 Kerry supporter.  I get the impression that this is not an elected leader but is someone of some local prominence.  We'll see.

It's on NLS, just saw it. (phriendlyjaime - 10/6/2006 1:00:14 PM)
Reverend Glen, a former Gilmore appointee.  He may have been a Kerry supporter, but the isn't a Democratic supporter by a longshot.

That's exactly what I heard. He was a Kerry supporter. (va.walter - 10/6/2006 1:03:47 PM)
This sounds right.  I'm familiar with Glenn (although less than Holley).  This is a good endorsement for Allen in Richmond but probably won't make much noise elsewhere.  The only statewide value for Allen is these add more black faces to Allen's endorsement list.  I'm still amazed by the black polling numbers we're seeing.  These may help him.

No, this endorsement is shadowed. (phriendlyjaime - 10/6/2006 1:12:09 PM)
Sorry.  Bobby Scott endorsed Webb and will be campaigning with him.  Not trying to be rude, but are you even kidding me?  Bobby Scott is a GOD in this state, to blacks and whites.

Where did I say anything about Bobby Scott? (va.walter - 10/6/2006 1:21:40 PM)
First I've seen of his name injected into this discussion.

I will disagree with your assessment of Scott statewide.  Having lived in NOVA, Chesapeake, Richmond and Roanoke. I've never seen Scott's name move the needle outside of his area.  That said, he is a HUGE asset and I hope Webb latches onto him for the next 5 weeks.

Ultimately, this isn't about who wins the black vote.  Obviously that's Webb.  It's about whether Allen gets 10%, 15%, 20% or god forbid more than 20%.  If you don't think more prominent black leaders supporting Allen will impact the numbers at all then I respectfully must say I think you're being naive.

You misunderstood me. (phriendlyjaime - 10/6/2006 1:31:31 PM)
First of all, I mentioned Bobby Scott.  I mention it bc I think his endorsement of Jim Webb this week shadows these small endorsements today.

Second, I disagree with you on the idea that people outside of his areas don't know him, and I agree with you that Webb should be latched onto him for the next 5 weeks.

Lastly, I think that it does matter, but I think the issues matter more.  Allen claims he wants to talk issues, yet he doesn't actually do it.  He's just running around trying to show he isn't racist.  We're right back to, "How can I be a racist, I have a black friend!"  It's demeaning and disgusting.

Where can I find that Bobby Scott endorsement? (elevandoski - 10/6/2006 1:58:08 PM)
I'd love to promote that fact at our VBDems blog.  We love him in Virginia Beach!

Sigh. (phriendlyjaime - 10/6/2006 2:00:34 PM)
Unfortunately, it was included in the Free Press, a newspaper not online and available only in Richmond.  Annoying.

That's curious... (elevandoski - 10/6/2006 2:09:04 PM)
Why haven't any of the other papers picked it up?  Is it a really recent endorsement?  Bobby Scott spoke at a VBDC breakfast on Sept. 23 and had great things to say about Webb - so his endorsement could be assumed.  But it's always nice to get that out there in black and white.

The Free Press (phriendlyjaime - 10/6/2006 2:12:05 PM)
states "just picked up" the endorsement of Rep. Scott.  I have a feeling, knowing the paper's style, that he probably did let them know just before the day of the paper's release, which is Thursday.

Ports Press Conference (mosquitopest - 10/6/2006 6:13:18 PM)
My friend went...Lots of black clergy were there from newport news, suffolk, portsmouth and norfolk...plus Allen was endorsed by Paul Gillis a former state NAACP chair.

I hear there's an article on the press conference at http://www.hrimc.org...

I'll be talking with my friend....If I get additional details I'll post something up tonight or tomorrow am

This could have an impact down here in Hampton Roads....Portsmouth traditionally goes democrat, it's got a majority of African Americans BUT never have the local black leaders endorsed a Republican like this....so it will be interesting.....
