He's Just Back from Raising $$ for Don "The Strangler" Sherwood (PM - 10/5/2006 12:42:17 PM)

This photo was taken in Scranton, Pa.  Cheney was there endorsing a guy who not only had an extramarital affair but was accused by his young mistress of repeatedly assaulting her, including strangling her.http://gort42.blogsp...

Here was the story from the Wilkes Barre Times Leader:

U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood and the woman who said he beat her throughout their five-year affair settled a lawsuit Tuesday. A three-sentence press release issued by Sherwood spokesman Paul Clark said Ore and Sherwood, R-Tunkhannock, "have resolved their differences and the lawsuit will be dismissed." Terms of the settlement are confidential," the statement said. "The parties will have no further comment.”

It alleged years of abuse by the married congressman, who admits to having a five-year affair with Ore, but denies ever assaulting her. The lawsuit stated Sherwood repeatedly struck Ore on her face, neck, chest and back; violently yanked her hair; and tried to strangle her by placing his hands around her neck. It also says Sherwood threatened to harm Ore if she talked to police about the alleged abuse.

Israel Ruiz, a Metropolitan police officer who took photos of Ore during that second investigation, told the Times Leader he believed Sherwood should have been arrested. He said the congressman was given preferential treatment because of his political position.

Fresh from Campaigning with DELAY!! (janis - 10/5/2006 12:46:06 PM)
[Crossposted at dKos]
Interesting interview with VP Cheney in the Washington Examiner today. The interview was conducted aboard Air Force Two yesterday after Cheney appeared with Tom Delay in a campaign appearance to raise $196,000 for the Republican write-in candidate for Delay's seat, Shelley Sekula-Gibbs.

While Cheney said, "The Foley thing ... as to how that cuts, I can't tell, " he offered this about Hastert:

"I'm a huge Denny Hastert fan -- I think he's a great speaker. And it makes no sense at all for him to think about stepping down."

The reporter writes that Cheney is determined not to let the scandal overshadow campaign issues that Cheney considers far more important -- national security and the economy. And Cheney flatly rejects any suggestion that the Democrats might prevail in the midterm elections.  Cheney declares:

"We will retain control of both houses."

But if the Dems were (horror of horrors) to take back the House and/or Senate, Cheney says Republicans are not afraid of Dem's subpoena power, predicting:

"I don't think they [Democrats] would get much done, if that's all they've got. And I don't think there's great enthusiasm on the part of the country for that.

Cheney then turns to the Iraq war and amazingly says:

I don't think the majority of the American people want to withdraw from Iraq. I think they'd prefer we complete the mission given to us.

Mr. Cheney, would that "majority" include the nearly three-quarters of Americans who said as early as 2005 that the number of casualties in Iraq is unacceptable, or the two-thirds that say the U.S. military there is bogged down or the nearly six in 10 that now say the war was not worth fighting [Washington Post/ABC Poll]

or would it include the 72% of American troops serving in Iraq in February of this year who thought then the U.S. should exit the country within 2006. [Zogby International Poll]

Fortunately, Mr. Cheney's track record on his predictions coming true is rather dismal.  Here's but a few Cheney oldie, but goodies:

"We will be treated as liberators"

"The insurgency is in its last throes"

"[W]e do know, with absolute certainty, that he is using his procurement system to acquire the equipment he needs in order to enrich uranium to build a nuclear weapon."

Saddam Hussein "had an established relationship with al Qaeda."

"[W]e believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons."

IRAQ ON THE RECORD: THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION'S PUBLIC STATEMENTS ON IRAQ

COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENT REFORM -- MINORITY OFFICE

So, in all likelihood (fingers crossed), Mr. Cheney's recent round of prognostications will come to a similar 180-degree wrong outcome.  Dick, you're no Kreskin!
