MCDC Canvass

We went out yesterday talking to our neighbors about our candidates, and what a wonderful day it was!

There are so many stories of the day.

I received a dollar from one canvasser due to a side bet he had with another volunteer that I would not be able to convince an elderly gentleman at the post office (who, based on the stickers on his tired pickup truck, seemed to have Republican tendencies) to support our candidates.....

That was one easy dollar to get - I convinced the man Allen & Davis had to go, AND HE NOW HAS TWO SIGNS IN HIS YARD - one for Shawn OGÇÖDonnell and one for Jim Webb.  We did have to detour to get the signs in his yard.

I am not spending that dollar!

But the most amazing story of the day for me was meeting Angie.

Angie and her family lost nearly everything in Isabel, and really had a hard time getting back on their feet. Our county was there for her, but her Federal Government failed her when her home was flooded.  FEMA asked for the money back, and she was forced to sell all they had and start over with a small child who also lost all her birthday presents when the house was flooded - talk about a sad story.

But this story begins when I approached the driveway, I noticed the aged Oldsmobile in the driveway with a "Bush/Cheney" sticker on the bumper.

I stood in the driveway, and thought, "do I want to go there, do I want to knock on this door?"

And then I thought that the only way we will win is to talk to some of those people who think they are Republicans.

Before I could decide what to do, Angie walked outside.

Angie and I chatted for quite some time about all that happened to her, about her job, healthcare, Iraq, and just how times are tough. I told her that there was a better way, that our government should work for us, and that she had the power to make those changes with her vote.

Angie, when I left, said she would support Jim Webb and Shawn O'Donnell, she took bumper stickers, and icing meet cake - we placed one sign for O'Donnell and one sign for Webb in her yard!!!

What a great day!

Very inspirational, keep up the great (Lowell - 10/1/2006 2:17:37 PM)
work!

please clarify MCDC (teacherken - 10/2/2006 1:42:31 PM)
I assume the M stands for a county, but I'd really rather not have to go looking at a Virginia map, and since I am not NLS I don't carry around a virtual map of the state in my head.  It helps those of us who are not total junkies to explain our abbreviations.  Thanks.

Jen is referring to (Susan Mariner - 10/2/2006 5:16:35 PM)
the Mathews County Democratic Committee.  Jen is the chair of the committee.  She does an outstanding job, and the members there are really active.  They are a small group, but always give it their all and are having a impact in that rural part of the state.

thanks and you can see why (teacherken - 10/2/2006 5:39:54 PM)
I had to ask  -- not the name of a county which everyone would know

Thanks Susan & Sorry teacherken (Jen Little - 10/3/2006 7:20:22 PM)
I have been checking out other postings, and forgot all about this one.

I am so sorry, teacherken - I should have responded.

You didn't know MCDC is the Mathews County Democratic Committee? =)

I am actually one of the fortunate few to call Mathews County home.  Susan is right, we do have a wonderful committee.  I feel so blessed to know such wonderful dedicated people.

Susan, thanks for getting this straight for me. Yet again you prove your rockstar status!
