Allen: All Negative, All the Time

Over at NLS, Ben nails it about George Allen's campaign - and specifically its website.  That's right, it's All Negative, All the Time.  As Ben writes:

In all the campaigns I have watched, I have never seen such a negative front page on a website for a candidate before. I urge everyone to visit Allen's site.  In all the campaigns I have watched, I have never seen such a negative front page on a website for a candidate before.

There are more attacks on Jim Webb when you visit this front page, than positive things for George Allen.

Allen's campaign wants to talk issues?  What a joke!

So true, Ben!  Now, lets' contrast Allen's suppress-the-vote nasty-fest with the Webb for Senate website, which has material about getting involved, about getting out of Iraq (unless you consider getting out of Iraq, with as much care as possible, to be a NEGATIVE thing), about military women endorsing Jim Webb, about Veterans for Webb, about Jim Webb on the issues, etc.  Good, positive stuff, as opposed to the nastiness emanating from the entire Allen website (including, of course, his surrogates).

Oh, by the way, Webb's "upcoming events" section lists stuff that Jim Webb's going to be doing in the next few weeks. Seems obvious, right?  A no brainer? Well, not to George Allen, apparently!  On HIS website, it's almost like SUSAN Allen is running for US Senate, not GEORGE Allen.  On Allen's website, it's all Susan, all the time.  What, are they HIDING George Allen or are they secretly running Susan?  It's bizarre, but this sitting U.S. Senator has now become THE STEALTH CANDIDATE!

P.S. I'd MUCH rather see Susan Allen, who I had the pleasure of meeting a couple months ago, in the U.S. Senate than her spitting, cussing, bullying, lying husband.  So, I can certainly understand the strategy here.

P.P.S. Imagine if Jim Webb's site listed all of his wife, Hong's, upcoming events - but not Jim Webb's?  The right wing would be taunting Webb and his campaign team relentlessly.  Just thought I'd mention that.

[UPDATE: According to the Daily Press, "After spending days secluded in his Senate office and otherwise dodging reporters, Allen chose to give an exclusive interview to Hannity, an acknowledged supporter who headlined a fundraiser for the senator."  So THAT'S what George Allen's been up to - hiding out in his Senate office.  Hiding from Jim Webb, war hero and great American. Ha!]

The sad thing is (summercat - 9/30/2006 7:25:31 AM)
that hard-core Republicans somehow blame "all these negative things" on the media bashing Allen.  I have heard comments along that line from two of the people I have called via the home phone program.  (Which, BTW, is terrific--and should, IMO, be front-paged on Jim's campaign website.)
Sounds like Susan Allen is becoming Virginia's Laura Bush.

and elsewhere.

We've gotten the app and the support up to par and we've seen exponential growth in calls in the 3 weeks the program has been running.  Now we're ready to promote it.  Keep an eye out and don't be afraid to share your PfH anecdotes in personal diaries here or on the Volunteer blog:

WOW! (Dan - 9/30/2006 8:48:13 AM)
Quite a difference.  You know, we did the same thing at the Kerry headquarters in Washington DC in 2004.  We noted that on the GOP site, you couldn't even see President Bush until you scrolled down.  The question is, will the press care about this?  This didn't with Kerry.  They covered it a little bit.
The Republicans are so disgusting about this.  No wonder they have lost touch with many in their own base!  I mean, just talk about small government, supporting the War on Terror(as Republicans see it), and tax cuts.  All that stuff makes sense.  But simply saying...Webb is a liar, Webb hates woman, the Media smears Allen, Webb is bad...Vote for George Allen, he is substantive ;)

What a bunch of B.S.!

How many women has Allen hidden behind? (Loudoun County Dem - 9/30/2006 9:49:11 AM)
Let's see...

Nancy Reagan,
His Mom,
The Three Female USNA grads in his ad,
And now his Wife...

Allen is not particularly chivalrous, is he?

Well., the Weekly Standard called him (Lowell - 9/30/2006 9:51:36 AM)
an "oaf."

Here in Virginia, we just call him a "bully" and a "coward."

Being Fair to Allen (PM - 9/30/2006 9:59:10 AM)
He has to go negative.  He has nothing to point to in the way of personal accomplishments.

All he's done is support a failed president and a failed war.

So, you see, you guys are being way too hard on him.

Gotta run.  There's a big puddle of sarcasm on my kitchen floor.

um.. (drmontoya - 9/30/2006 10:06:19 AM)
I could be wrong but didn't george allen say he wanted to run and I quote "a postive campaign of ideas".

when did that end? and why?

See (Lowell - 9/30/2006 10:16:16 AM)
here.

so.. (drmontoya - 9/30/2006 10:31:27 AM)
why? oh, because he's a bully. and a liar.

he never wanted to run a positive campaign...

from what everyone is saying when has george allen ever ran a postive campaign?

I hope all the negative stuff backfires. Good people need to be elected in all political races. Not just here in Virginia.

I hear Congress is now a horny mans dream (Jeff B - 9/30/2006 10:35:00 AM)

A horny Republican sexual predator's dream, (Lowell - 9/30/2006 10:36:28 AM)

Mark Foley on Clinton. . . (PM - 9/30/2006 12:06:43 PM)
http://www.sptimes.c...

Republicans were aghast at Clinton's behavior, with many saying it showed he had lied and abused his power.

"It's vile," said Rep. Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach. "It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction."

I'll ask it here too -- since Allen-fundraiser Hannity has in effect given Allen a free political ad with his interview, does the equal time doctrine require Fox to give Webb free political time?

Allen's Schedule... (Eric - 9/30/2006 12:09:27 PM)
The missing schedule isn't new.  I had tried to find some info on the ethnic rally a few weeks ago and there was nothing about his schedule or events.  The less people who see him the less likely someone will report him saying the next stupid thing.

He's busy updating his website (loboforestal - 9/30/2006 12:32:35 PM)

Looks like Virgil doesn't want anybody to know his party affiliation.  I wonder why?

RE: Hannity (JPTERP - 9/30/2006 12:17:39 PM)
Should have asked Allen about his meeting with Tom Tancredo back in September of 2005.

Via Max Blumenthal of "The Nation"

"Tancredo, of course, has claimed that his anti-immigration stances have "nothing to do with ethnicity or race." Yet his proximity to his white nationalist admirers is closer than he publicly concedes. Perched in the rear of the Dulles Hyatt conference hall sipping a Diet Coke, Gordon Lee Baum, the leader of America's largest white nationalist organization, the Council of Conservative Citizens, told me, "Tancredo's pretty good. We've had him down a few times to meet with us." Though Baum didn't elaborate, another CCC member, California-based anti-immigrant doyenne Barbara Coe, spoke alongside Tancredo at a February 8 rally at the US Capitol in support of the Minutemen."

From the same article . . .

"Already, a surprising array of Republican presidential contenders are emulating Tancredo. Senator George Allen of Virginia met privately with Tancredo in September to seek his blessing and advice. Tancredo said he came away mildly encouraged."

http://www.thenation...

I can understand why Allen is going so negative.  He loses on both character issues and on his record.  He can't measure up to Webb on character, and in particular, on national security issues, he can't hold a candle to Webb.

What options does Allen have left?

Allen and His Negative Campaign (seamusotoole - 9/30/2006 12:18:14 PM)
This negative campaigning didn't work for Kilgore withKaine.  It backfired on Kilgore big time.  Let's just get out there and counter those attacks on Webb with one person at a time.  I just "love" the way Allen attacks Webb for not talking about the issues and his "opposition having no plan."  This is after Webb stands there for ten minutes talking about his plan.  The truth of the matter is that Allen is a rubber stamp for Bush and HE's the one with NO
plan.  We need to counter this stuff one on one with our families and neighbors.  Anytime I get the opportunity in conversation with a neighbor I talk positively about Webb and counter any negative ads about him.

I was just notified by my husband that our basset hound
Seamus O'Toole has somehow gotten a Webb sticker on his tail.  He is also a walking advertisement to elect Webb as our next Senator.

I also wish we could get the woman from Annapolis who has now endorsed Webb to come out in some way whether through Letters to the Editor or an ad with other female military people praising Webb and what he's done for women.

Allen's website (Quizzical - 9/30/2006 1:17:58 PM)
What I don't get is, Jim Webb says (as I understand it) that he is completely comfortable with the role of women in today's military, and he thinks the military itself should decide questions like that.  So, is George Allen saying that he wants women in combat roles MORE than they are at present?  Does Allen want 50% of all infantry platoon commanders in the USMC to be women?  Where is he going with this issue?  Nowhere, it seems to me.  It's all a bunch of crap.

That's a great point n/t (Alicia - 9/30/2006 2:39:42 PM)

I Don't Think Allen Understands These Fine Points (PM - 9/30/2006 5:12:29 PM)
Remember Allen's garbled answer in the  debate about stem cell research?

As I said before in another post, I wonder if he even understands that his conservative base is against women being in the miilitary?  (I cited some survey data on the point.)

I've met so many people in politics and government just like him -- they have "talking points" intelligence but can't go one level deep into the issues.

Speaking of people with limited ability, the new Woodward book tears Condi Rice apart.  Someone called her an "ineffectual enabler."

The future of the right-wing agenda (vote-left - 9/30/2006 5:42:10 PM)
Down in the bottom left column of Allen's senate.gov web site, it has a map of Virginia and says:

"Senator Allen has five regional offices to serve you."

It then goes on to list six regional offices:

1. Central
2. Hampton Roads / Eastern Shore
3. NOVA
4. Southside / Piedmont
5. Southwest
6. Western / Valley

Plus, his D.C. office

http://allen.senate....

Is this what we have to look forward to if we follow the right-wing path and receive home schooling like Ben Domenech of Red State?
