From the Webb campaign...great news!

Including Naval Academy Grad Who Formerly Stood with Allen

A number of women who served in the U.S. armed forcesGÇöincluding a Naval Academy grad who formerly stood with Sen. George AllenGÇövoiced their support of Jim WebbGÇÖs candidacy for the U.S. Senate today.

The women hailed JimGÇÖs commitment to advancing womenGÇÖs roles and broadening their responsibility in the United States military.

Linda Ponstenriender, a 1982 Naval Academy grad who was recruited to speak at a press conference commandeered by the Allen campaign earlier this month, said she has since heard from Jim Webb and liked what he has to say. Today, Ponstenriender officially endorsed WebbGÇÖs candidacy.

GÇ£On September 13, 2006, I took part in a press conference in Richmond which was facilitated by the Allen campaign.  The focus of the event was primarily an article that Jim Webb wrote in 1979.  I participated to take the opportunity to publicly challenge Mr. Webb to make an apology to the women and men of the Brigade at the U.S. Naval Academy for the disruption and hate the article provoked.  That same day, Mr. Webb issued such an apology.  In my statement on the 13th, I said I would be much more likely to support Mr. Webb if he were to issue an apology,GÇ¥ said Ponstenriender.  GÇ£I would like to thank Jim Webb for recognizing that an apology was needed and for issuing one.  It is clear to me that I would cast a vote for Jim Webb in the Virginia Senate race.GÇ¥

GÇ£IGÇÖll admit-- fighting nearly 150 years of tradition with many of the men being second, third or even fourth generation attendees, it was not easy to be a woman in the U.S. Naval Academy. But, it made me even more determined to succeed,GÇ¥ said Christine M. Gromek, 1984 U.S. Naval Academy Graduate.

GÇ£When in a position to effect change as Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Webb opened many opportunities for women.  Senator Allen, on the other hand, in the role of Governor, resisted the admittance of women to VMI,GÇ¥ continued Gromek. GÇ£Virginia needs to be represented by a Senator who wants to serve and cares about crucial issues like the U.S.GÇÖs interpretation of the Geneva Convention, the war in Iraq, health care, and our constitutional system of checks and balances.GÇ¥

GÇ£Jim WebbGÇÖs record with regard to women in the military is first-rate.  He understands the invaluable role that women play in todayGÇÖs armed forces,GÇ¥ said Lt. Colonel Kate Wilder.  GÇ£This is man who took great initiative to open doors to women in this country, and he has my full support.GÇ¥

GÇ£As the Secretary of the Navy, Jim Webb opened up 15,000 new billets for women.  Jim has always honored and respected the work of women in our armed services and when he found himself in a leadership role, he proactively worked to open more jobs specifically for women.  Jim WebbGÇÖs actions helped women across the armed forces.  He is the leader we need in the U.S. Senate,GÇ¥ said Nancy McPherson, retired Coast Guard, YN1 Petty Officer First Class.

GÇ£Jim Webb served. He has worn the uniform into battle and he has the deepest respect for everyone who wears this countryGÇÖs uniform and puts themselves in harmGÇÖs way defending us.  He knows that we need men and women working together in our national defense for the strongest possible military force,GÇ¥ said Brigadier General Clara Adams-Ender, U.S. Army, retired. GÇ£Jim Webb has the vision, character and exceptional military experience that we need in Congress.  And, thatGÇÖs why I stand in support of him.GÇ¥

We salute these women. (Kathy Gerber - 9/29/2006 7:02:36 PM)
Their courage and commitment to the truth is inspirational.

this is great news (chiefsjen - 9/29/2006 8:33:43 PM)
thanks for this update.

Thank you for your service (JennyE - 9/29/2006 7:12:50 PM)
And a big thank you to Ms. Ponstenriender for standing with Webb. I hope we see them in a TV ad for Webb to counteract the slime attack piece Allen has on now.

It Really Takes A Lot of Courage to Change Position (PM - 9/29/2006 7:46:23 PM)
like Ms. Ponstenriender did.

Holy Shit! (Eric - 9/29/2006 8:07:07 PM)
That's devastating to Allen.

For one of the key people he's using to attack Webb to come out so quickly is going to destroy that fabricated line of attack.

I'll bet it was the combination of how Jim handled it (very nicely, thank you) and that Ms. Ponstenriender learned a little more about George Allen these past two weeks.  Hell, a lot of people are learning about Allen and not too many of them like what they're finding out.

What now?  Is the Allen camp going to attack and try to discredit her?  Oh wait, they already went on record with her - implying that she's a believable witness.

Hell, Wadhams and company can solved this one: When she says bad things about Democrats she is honest and speaking the truth.  When she says good things about Democrats the Webb campaign and RK have paid her off - taking advantage of some desperate situation she's in.  How dare they take advantage of an honest woman.

Heh - that was fun making up shit.  Maybe I can join the Allen team...  then again, no.

Nice try with the whole women hate Webb thing, George.  Too bad it bit you in the ass.

Webb has been endorsed by the Black Caucus (Lowell - 9/29/2006 9:18:29 PM)
See here for the great news.  Thanks so much to the Legislative Black Caucus for this endorsement!

we need ads. (drmontoya - 9/29/2006 8:25:47 PM)
about this.. now!!!

again. wow. (drmontoya - 9/29/2006 8:32:34 PM)
All we need is the black leaders to endorse and wilder and this race is OVER...

even a powell endorsement of webb would just be a formality.

wowzer.

Who knows... (Arturo - 9/29/2006 9:44:51 PM)
Maybe Sen. Lambert will change his mind too?  Especially after that devastating lte in the Richmond Free Press.

Women and the Military (seamusotoole - 9/29/2006 11:00:00 PM)
Thank you to Linda Ponstenriender for backing Webb.  He admitted he made a mistake when he was 32 years old and tried to make up for it be making sure women in the military were promoted and given decent jobs.  How refreshing that someone can take responsibility for his actions unlike George Allen who continues to lie about the pattern of bigotry and racism that he has exhibited since high school.

I wish there could be a rebuttal ad  to Allen.  It's up to
the Webb supporters in Virginia to show Mr. Allen that money can't buy elections.  It's time for a change.  I can only hope that Virginians will do the right thing on November 7th.

Keep the money pouring into Virginia so we can fight back against the sleasy ads.

Thank YOU!!!! (TurnVirginiaBlue - 9/30/2006 12:16:04 AM)
I'm glad to see it because I personally think Webb was a jerk initially...frankly I just don't know how else to word it, but he clearly made inroads for women and it's also pretty obvious he changed his initial attitudes as he saw the reality of women and their mean fightin' machine!

So, today, he's the guy to support women in the military and they recognized it!  Excellent!

That's one thing about Jim Webb (Lowell - 9/30/2006 8:51:19 AM)
He learns and he grows with reading and with life experience.  George Allen, apparently, stays locked in a 1950s/60s past of cliched football sayings and outdated, now-reviled attitudes towards minorities.  More substantively, George Allen represents a DIFFERENT VIRGINIA from the one we now live in.  Jim Webb represents a forward-thinking, "forward together," 21st century, inclusive Virginia.  George Allen represents a backward-looking, divisive, "wedge issues," 19th/early 20th century, exclusive Virginia.  It's time to move into the 21st century, and that means Jim Webb for US Senate!

Yes!! (summercat - 9/30/2006 7:30:15 AM)
Three cheers for these women's thoughtful and articulate support for Jim!
