(Fredericksburg, VA) G Former Commander in Chief of U.S. Central Command General Anthony Zinni, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark and Secretary Colin PowellGs former Chief of Staff Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson joined U.S. Senate Candidate Jim Webb today to reaffirm his commitment to helping veterans across America. Currently, Webb has over 650 men and women who served in our armed services across Virginia who have signed up on the campaign website in support of his candidacy.GǣOne of the great concerns for me, as someone who grew up in the military, is how our young men and women are being treating during their service and after. The people who have served and are serving will have no greater friend if IGm elected to the United States Senate,Gǥ said Jim Webb. GǣIGm not throwing these proposals out as a way to attract people to me; theyGre just things I care deeply about.Gǥ
Jim Webb outlined three policy initiatives benefiting VirginiaGs veterans that he would work toward implementing as VirginiaGs U.S. Senator:
* Introduce a 5 percent tax credit for AmericaGs Veterans.
* Create a New GI Bill that will grant the post-September 11 veterans the same benefits of those veterans who served in WWII.
* Fully fund the Department of Veterans Affairs to keep AmericaGs promises to our veterans.
Jim Webb is a decorated Marine, former Secretary of the Navy and Assistant Secretary of Defense, an award-winning author and widely respected journalist. Webb was awarded, among other decorations, the Navy Cross and Silver Star for valor as a Marine in Vietnam.
GǣJim Webb has the courage, the character and particularly the exceptional military experience that we need now in Congress. We need people in Congress who understand how to employ our military and do it in a strategic and operationally sound way,Gǥ said Gen. Zinni. GǣWe need to preserve a strong military with capabilities to meet the challenges of today, which I think are unique in our history. And we need to take care of our men and women in uniform.Gǥ
GǣWe need Jim Webb in the Senate because he will take care of the military, respect our veterans and make sure our forces are deployed the right way. But more than that, we need Jim Webb because he has the courage and integrity to ask the right questions,Gǥ said Gen. Clark. GǣHe will be a great representative of the people of Virginia. HeGll make a difference in national policy making. He can be a force on the national stage. He can be the American conscience.Gǥ
GǣAs Chief of Staff to Secretary Colin Powell in the George W. Bush administration, I saw the inner workings of that administration up close and personal. When I left the Administration in January 2005, I spoke out about against certain decisions I felt were grievous failures. I watched my Senator, whom I will admit that I voted for, George Allen, act principally as a Bush clone throughout. I donGt believe he deviated from the presidentGs positions one iota G unlike more courageous Senators like John McCain, John Warner and Lindsey Graham recently. So I began looking for someone else to vote for, and I didnGt have to look any further once Jim Webb entered the race. I believe Jim Webb stands for the sort of America I stand for G tolerant, generous, willing to lead the international community rather than dictate to it, and he certainly understands war,Gǥ said Col. Wilkerson.
All this nonsense about Jim Webb not talking about the issues is strictly that, nonsense. Jim Webb has been talking about the issues continuously for months now. Jim Webb has been talking about powerful themes for America. But the mainstream media seems far more interested in focusing on the latest "m" or "n" word report, and not so much on in-depth discussion of issues. This, of course, works to George Allen's great advantage, since he's the candidate with almost no substance or accomplishments to his name, while Jim Webb is the candidate of extraordinary substance and accomplishments.
Here's the bottom line: if this campaign is about the issues, Jim Webb wins. If this campaign is about the two candidates' life accomplishments and characters, Jim Webb wins. If this campaign is about the latest gossip and supposed "scandal," then it's very possible George Allen wins. Which is why the Allen campaign is relentlessly pushing "scandal" and negativity, spending millions of dollars to do so. Frankly, it's up to the mainstream media to see through the Allen campaign's mudslinging and to report the facts. If they don't, then they're not doing their jobs.
According to Woodward, insurgent attacks against coalition troops occur, on average, every 15 minutes, a shocking fact the administration has kept secret. “It’s getting to the point now where there are eight-, nine-hundred attacks a week. That’s more than 100 a day. That is four an hour attacking our forces,” says Woodward.
Someone who brings expertise to the table -- that's what we need in Washington.
This has started as pebbles that dislodged rocks that built into an avalanche that is burying the Allen campaign, as more people come out with their testimonials of brutish behavior by Allen more witnesses will become empowered to do so as well...
Copy and Paste, Stamp and Mail.
jim webb has consistently tried to move away from this issue and talk about iraq -- the guy knows his stuff and Va would be a much better place with a man like him representing us.
but george allen isn't the man for the job -- he never was -- and now people are realizing it -- iraq is a disaster of historic proportions -- and we need to get moving on a plan other than what's been going on.
bush admin is completely dillusional -- rumsfeld himself today said 'we dont know that the iraq war is breeding new terrorists' and called the NIE -- the very document they claimed pre-war was 100000000000000% right on the money as now FLAT WRONG -- that's not rational thinking -- that's insanity and NOW thanks to bush and repub congress -- we're now denying anyone they deem as an enemey combatant humane treatment regardless of guilt -- torture, sexual abuse and rape, and no right to a fair trial.
if they were REALLY SERIOUS about BRINGING terrorists to justice, they would present a fair and open trial and make no doubt that the evidence against them is solid.
because you bring an innocent person in, torture them until they will agree to tell you anything AND THEN you use that against them in a military tribunal and give them no look at the evidence and then they are convicted behind closed doors with evidence that was beaten out of them.
how anybody could support this i will never understand. if a person really is a "terrorist" then you should be able to have solid evidence.
it's a sad day in america and for virginia today because this is the type of stuff allen supports -- and i've lived in Va for 38 yrs, this is not who I am and never was or ever will be!
Get over yourself, you're a joke.
Frankly, I think he has a good point. We are beating a dead horse. We all know Allen is a racist at this point, lets move on and clearly demonstrate how horrible a senator Allen has been and will continue to be if he is re-elected.
I'm not defending 4thGipper's other comments, just this one.
That we are not safer.
Democrats can make us safer. And we will show you GOP loyalists soon enough how tough we are on terror.
When the dems win BOTH houses we will show America and the world the meaning of tough on terror.
We just won't act tough, and wear cowboy boots like GB and GA.
Because this isn't a game, it's serious.
I mean this stuff is GREAT! So, I would claim it's up to us to promote diaries on the blogs outlining these ideas.
Let's follow Webb's lead when on Hardball he forced Chris Matthews to do a 180 and actually ask a question on strategy with Iraq instead of trying to smear some of Allen's Macaca shit on Webb.
Let's do the same and diary the hell out of Webb's ideas for new direction in America.
Allen 49
Webb 43.5%
Zogby
He released a slew of them today, and they seem to be consistent with a lot of other polls
5.5% down with a month to go -- who would have thought it would be this close
