Congressman Davis Vows "Occoquan won't get squat"

According to eyewittesses to the confrontation at the Democrat's table at the Occoquan Craft Fair on Sunday, Tom Davis had an argument with Occoquan Mayor Democrat Earnie Porta.  Tom Davis was canvassing the crowd when he saw Mr. Porta standing on the front porch of his house, which faces Occoquan's Washington St and which sports a giant banner for Davis' opponent, Andrew Hurst.
Davis asked Porta, "Did you give a thousand dollars to Andrew Hurst?"  Porta replied, "Yes, from my own private funds."  "Well, when I'm reelected, Occoquan won't get squat".

When pondering the situation one wonders why Davis was having research done on who actually gave money to his vastly underfunded and non-PAC money taking opponent.  My goodness, how thin-skinned can you be.  And a thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket compared to all the money that Davis raises.

This is how Tom Davis functions.  It's all down to the dirty dollar where Davis is concerned.  A prominent area Democrat can't even give from his private funds to support a fellow Democrat without the primadonna of the 11th District getting upset.  Imagine the fun if Davis actually loses the election!

Do you love the beautiful picturesque town of Occoquan, VA.  Love crafts and the arts?  Love the Occoquan river and boats?  Then I urge you to VOTE HURST - SAVE OCCOQUAN!!!!!

I wish you caught THAT on video camera!  What a dick Tom Davis is.  Andy would be 10 times the Congressman he ever would.

So much for his constituent service claims (Henry M - 9/27/2006 9:40:00 AM)
I guess Davis' claims of bringing so many projects to the 11th has a political party litmus test.  Rumors have been circulating that Davis does this with private donors as well -- threatens them if they dare support anything he is against.  It is nice to finally see that he made such a thuggish comment in public.

VOTE HURST!

Wow - what happened to Tom? (snolan - 9/27/2006 2:16:33 PM)
This is a very different Congressman Davis than the one who used to be my representative when I lived in Fairfax; however, it seems to be that way all this election cycle.

Tom must be having a bad season...  he used to be nice to you even when you supported the other guy.

I gave $1000 to the Robert McBride campaign in 2000, and worked a lot to get his name recognition up there.  The sad truth is Robert (as a 3th and 4th party candidate) never had a chance, and even the Democrat in 2000 did not have a chance to beat Davis in the 11th (anyone remember who that was?).

I contacted (then) my congressman about the insidiously evil Tauzin-Dingell handout to RBOCS and got very nice responses from Congressman Davis despite his being aware of my supporting an opponent.  Once I discovered him to be responsive, I contacted him on several issues - until I moved out of the district in 2002.  He was always responsive, always polite, and only agreed with me on that one issue (Tauzin-Dingell - the NetNeutrality issue of it's time).

I guess it is easy to be magnanimous with constituent service when you are assured of victory!

OH WAIT!!! (phriendlyjaime - 9/27/2006 9:40:53 AM)
According to the F-Team, the Dems were "nowhere to be seen" at that festival.  I guess they are lying again...

We were at the table right next to them all the time (demnan - 9/27/2006 10:02:25 AM)
My day was Saturday, a friend who relayed this story to me was there Sunday.

Lying Republicans.

If anyone has them (phriendlyjaime - 9/27/2006 10:03:27 AM)
please post some pics.

Davis Has Always Been a Bully (Thomas Paine - 9/27/2006 10:37:00 AM)
Rep. Tom Davis' nasty comments to Mayor Porta are part of a long-standing pattern. Davis has always tried to dry up his opponent's money.

Once, Davis even had a candidate fired from his job so he wouldn't run.

There are many stories about Davis bullying contributors so they wouldn't contribute to his opponents.  Andy Hurst told a gathering of supporters one time that Davis even called partners at Hurst's law firm to try and coerce them into not contributing to Hurst.

Davis plays nice guy when he is out in public, but he is really a nasty individual who seeks and gets revenge against his enemies.

And let's not forget that he votes with Bush more than 90% of the time, he is an ardent supporter of the Iraq War, and he voted in favor of the marriage amendment.

What a guy!

I agree wholeheartedly. I hope by now you've all seen this ill advised confrontation with a Hurst staffer: What a guy!

Deeply nasty (Leaves on the Current - 9/27/2006 10:37:12 AM)
Occoquan is a jewel, and Tom Davis henceforth has no right to set foot there.

Is this incident well attested?  Has the mainstream press picked it up?

MSM hasn't (demnan - 9/27/2006 10:47:43 AM)
I heard it yesterday from a friend who was eyewitness.  I guess I have the scoop!  My friend doesn't blog.  It did make the rounds at the Andrew Hurst fundraiser yesterday, so I'm sure more people will know about it soon.  Andy heard about it yesterday.  I haven't spoken to Earnie since Saturday, so I don't have his take on this.

This is the ugly side (Eric - 9/27/2006 10:38:29 AM)
of Tom Davis' "you can buy me" philosophy.

I've got the nice version on tape (from the ethnic rally) where Davis says he went out of his way in a rain storm to help change a flat tire for a woman because he saw she had a Davis bumper sticker.

It boils down to this: if you do something for Tom he'll be nice to you.

You gave $500 to my opponent (Teddy - 9/27/2006 11:08:12 AM)
That's how Tom Davis greeted me when I joined a group meeting him at his Annandale office about social security. He was referring to my donation to Ken Longmyer in the previous election to this one. Earlier, he had asked the Realtor's Govt. Affairs Director (our paid staffer, Mary Beth Coya) "what happened to Teddy?" because he had not received his customary donation from me. Mary Beth told him the truth: "Teddy didn't leave the Republican Party, it left her," thus letting him know I was no longer a Republican.

You bet he keeps an eagle eye on who donates how much to whom. What I told him at his Annandale office was, "Yes, I did. It's not you, Tom, it's your party. It's a mess." But by now, unfortunately, it IS Tom as well as his party. He is too entangled in the whole creepy and disgusting mess.

COMMENT HIDDEN (littlepunk - 9/27/2006 12:38:42 PM)

I experienced it (Teddy - 9/27/2006 2:21:30 PM)
"Where do you guys get this from?" I simply told you exactly what happened to me. I was a little surprised that big Tom knew to the penny where my dollars had gone but it did not strike me as odd, just typically Republican  since you guys really are money-oriented above everything, everything else, that's the main value in the "Values" theme when you get down to it--- admit it, God WANTS you to be greedy.  And Tom did not kick my dog.

Here is an example (mickeyd - 9/27/2006 3:16:18 PM)
Tom Davis threatened to use his power in Congress to take retribution against Major League Baseball if it entertained a group seeking to purchase the Nationals that included billionaire and Bush critic George Soros.

In Fairness (eporta - 9/27/2006 3:40:25 PM)
Someone just brought this entry to my attention.  While I don't normally participate in blogs and was not thrilled by my conversation with Tom Davis on Sunday, I do believe in fairness and so want to set the record straight on a few points.

First, Tom did not call to me on my porch; we were no where near my house.  The whole conversation took place by the Republican booth as I was walking home with some items I had bought at the fair.  In fairness to Tom, he seemed less angry about my monetary contribution to Andy Hurst than other things.  After all, in a much friendlier conversation at the Dale City July 4th parade I had disclosed to him that Andy Hurst was a personal friend of mine and that I thus felt compelled to support him.  At that time Tom indicated he understood and gave me an example of his having had to do the same thing in the past.  He responded that as elected officials we still shouldn't "go after" each other, which I thought was reasonable, and reflective of the Tom Davis that I will admit (which will score me no points with Democrats) I have often voted for since my days living in Fairfax.

What really seemed to have set him off at the fair was not my giving money to a personal friend, but his belief that I had been "trashing" him on the Hurst web site.  I've no idea where he got his information, but it was absolutely false.  Not only have I not trashed Tom, but to my knowledge I've never been quoted, paraphrased, or even mentioned on the Hurst web site save for a photo shaking the hand of a Hurst volunteer from a period before I was an elected official.  Also in fairness, in terms of bad temper it was not all one-sided.  I admit to having been both surprised and angry at him for his accusation for a whole host of reasons, only one of which was that it wasn't true.  After repeatedly arguing about the inaccuracy of his assertion--my guess is that a staffer just gave him bad information--we both calmed down and that was the end of it.

Earnie Porta

Thank you for setting the record straight! (snolan - 9/27/2006 4:17:56 PM)
Way to go Mayor Porta; thank you very much for the first hand account.

Some of the observations reported may not have been correct (demnan - 9/27/2006 9:53:37 PM)
and I didn't personally witness this.  But I must ask how come there was a confrontation in the first place with someone as conciliatory as Mr. Porta?  Why would there even be a ugly scene?  If Mr. Davis holds all the cards in this election against an underfunded opponent, how could he not be a gentlemen?

Leave it to the Republicans - they make the sorest winners.  I'll fight them every day, just like the big dog, the last rightfully elected President, Bill Clinton.  Just like Andrew Hurst.

We should all.......... (Ambivalent Mumblings - 9/27/2006 10:58:18 PM)
....donate to Andy and then send Davis a letter saying how much we donated and why. That way he could save the taxpayers money by not spending the time to look it up.

Tom Davis did not vote... (vote-left - 9/28/2006 1:52:13 PM)

Where was Tom? (Andrea Chamblee - 9/29/2006 10:38:00 AM)
Maybe another lavish trip to Italy?

Or maybe Andy Hurst is making him pound the pavement this election year, for a change?

Maybe he was making sure the new report on the Abramoff "investigation" - the one that didn't include any information from Abramoff was stripped of the information to show that Abramoff and Davis raised money together at the NRCC and Abramoff made payments to Davis's campaign funds.
