Unravelings

Paul Galanti is the Veterans' Coordinator for George Allen.  Along with Chris LaCivita, he was one of the original perpetrators of the swift boat events during the 2004 election.  I came to know Paul at the Medical Society of Virginia. At that time he did not have any friends in the workplace, and I made a point of going down and smoking a cigarette with him just about every day.  it was in his office that I first ever heard Rush Limbaugh on the radio.  At that time, we discussed various topics and disagreed on many.

The uncomfortable reality is that over the course of time I got to know Paul as an individual who has a decidedly problematic history with women.  And while not the subject of this diary, the details of those matter are nearly as sordid as some of those coming to light that George Allen are embroiled in now.
Why This Matters Now
With very little googling, George Allen is removed from the most extreme neo-Nazi hate groups in this country by only a few degrees of separation.  I mention this not to condemn George Allen for such a 2nd hand association, but certainly he is acutely aware of the level of their hatred for gays, people of color and particularly Jews. Some of these disturbing connections may actually help make a bit of sense of George Allen's strange response to questions of his heritage at the MTP debate.

Recall the swift boating of John Kerry.  One of the much publicized claims at the time was that hearing John Kerry caused Galanti to have a flashback for the first time ever.  Genghis Khan, etc. I never believed this claim.   Some 10 years earlier Paul had ranted about Kerry the same as he did about Jane Fonda - freely and angrily though not nearly as often.

Now George Allen has brought in ex-navy women who complain about Jim Webb.  Most if not all of these women were cadets at the naval academy when Galanti was stationed there as an instructor.  They most certainly know him via the naval academy, and the strategy is nearly identical.  As Galanti attempted to lay his brutal treatment as a POW at the feet of John Kerry, the effort here was to lay every scrap of 1980's military misogyny in the at the feet of Jim Webb.  The timing betrays the motive, but the symbology is perfectly isometric.

Paul Galanti refers on a web site he maintains to a book authored by fellow Navy Commander Gerald Atkinson: How Radical Feminism is Destroying the Navy. 

The admiration between Galanti and Atkinson is mutual. In a 10,000 word multipart rant to one Stewie Baby Atkinson writes

It is strange that you mention the Vietnam War heroes -- McCain, Stockdale, Galanti, and McDaniels as being your 'mentors.' Paul Galanti is a friend who supports the work that I am doing now. Two others, both NamPOWs and fellow-Vigilante pilots, Jim Bell and Jerry Coffee, are very close friends.  But do you know what?  None of the latter view themselves as HEROES. They are certainly proud of what they survived and that they came home with honor. But heroes?  No. They are survivors.

In 2004 Atkinson further supported the swift boat efforts of Galanti et al by hosting a free download of "Stolen Honor" on his website.  Via Ret. Vanguard News Network is the only pickup to Atkinson's generous offer that I located by google.  An important detail is that ADL lists only 26 individuals under extremism in America. Linder, host of Vanguard News Network is one of the infamous 26.

If George Allen had an iota of awareness of the extreme antisemitism among the friends of his most avid supporters, his reaction to a public discussion of Jewish heritage is perfectly understandable.   It was an easy matter for Albright, Kerry, etc. to embrace their Jewish heritage comfortably.  Doing so was in no way a betrayal of their supporters.

Perhaps George Allen really was scared to death rather than being antisemitic himself.  And for what it's worth, this group and Frey's activities are based in California.

Returning to Atkinson, his site has long featured a Jessica Lynch Corner which exudes a bizarre hatred of women.

Jessica Lynch's 'heroism' in 'combat' is only one small part of the radical feminist agenda of creating Mythical Modern American War Heroes. There have been countless attempts to elevate the ordinary and mundane in naval aviation to heroic proportions by radical feminists, along with their political and military sympathizers. The creation of these myths has been conscious and systematic.
  It is becoming abundantly clear that the mass media as well as the elites of the political and military classes in America are riddled with Symbolic Interactionists. It is they who have created Pvt. Jessica Lynch as the Modern American War Hero. It is they who have promoted the CDR Moneypenny (the anonymous 'glass ceiling' breaker), LT Kara Hultgreen (the first female Navy fighter pilot to die in a fighter squadron),  LT Ashley (the English-school-girl, and would-be movie heroine), Kirstin (the 'chicks rule' you-go-girl), LT Melony Lynch (the female naval aviation recruiting poster-girl), LT 'Missy' Cummings (the failed F/A-18 FRS student pilot) and a female Marine crewmember of a C-130 transport to heroine status based on hype, misrepresentation of the truth, falsehood, and creative imagination - in fact, on myth.

Lastly, Gerald Atkinson has written weird attacks on Jews himself available in the waybackmachine.  As noted at Southern Poverty Law Center 'Cultural Marxism,' a conspiracy theory with an anti-Semitic twist, is being pushed by much of the American right.  This is the article intro from SPLC:

Television commentator Pat Buchanan says it is being used to "de-Christianize" America. Washington heavyweight William Lind claims it is turning U.S. college campuses into "ivy-covered North Koreas." Retired naval commander Gerald Atkinson fears it has invaded the nation's military academies. Immigration activist John Vinson suggests it aims "to distort and destroy" our country.

"Cultural Marxism," described as a conspiratorial attempt to wreck American culture and morality, is the newest intellectual bugaboo on the radical right. Surprisingly, there are signs that this bizarre theory is catching on in the mainstream.

There is no tidy summary to this network of hate based affinity groups.  I am not suggesting that George Allen participates in those groups in any formal way.  But I do think it is very possible that fear of these extremists may be a clue to some of George Allen's unusual behavior surrounding his own heritage.

I do understand that many people do not have the stomach for sifting through this material, but I think it's important.  We need to shed more light on these extremist groups, not less.  And we need to have a better understanding of their influence and relationships - formal and informal -  with our elected leaders as well.
